New Windows update stops Office 2007 B2 Cold

N

NavyMustang

Last night, my computer automatically downloaded and installed the following
Windows Updates:

Windows XP Update KB922582
Windows XP Update KB920872
Security Update KB919007
Security Update KB920685
Update for Outlook 2003 - Junk E-mail filter KB921580

This automatic update stopped Office 2007 B2 cold. When trying to open
Outlook, I now get the error message "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot
initialize Microsoft Office Shared Utilities. Restart your computer or
reinstall Microsoft Outlook."

When trying to open Word or Excel: "There is not enough memory or disk
space to run Word (Excel)."

Of course, I have restarted (twice) to no avail and have shut down any
memory intensive application. Nothing seems to work. I am going to roll
back my system to before it installed the updates and I'll report back here.

UPDATE ONE...

FIRST of all, I forgot to mention that I DID install the tech refresh that
was released yesterday BEFORE reporting this problem, and it did NOT correct
the situation.

Ok, so I reverted back to just before the first of the "Software
Distribution Service 2.0" updates, and Office went back to normal. When I
opened Outlook though, I got the "Preparing to install" and the "Please wait
while Windows configures Microsoft Office Professional 2007 (Beta)"
notifications. THEN it was back to normal.

WELL, at least as far as Office is concerned! As soon as my system rebooted
following the checkpoint restore, I got a McAfee VirusScan error stating that
an "activeshield component is missing or corrupt". McAfee immediately
started downloading an update which, after a few minutes, corrected the
problem.

NOW, everything is back to the way it was before the Windows Autoupdate. I
am going to go through each of the potential problems one at a time and see
which one was the culprit. (Unless someone has beaten me to it and wants to
let the rest of the world know!) I'll report as soon as I find it!

The culprit was probably the Outlook 2003 update. There is a bug in the
2007 setup which prevents 2003 from being completely removed all the
time. So you might have remnants of 2003 left and when you install a
patch for 2003, those remnants get patched. As there can always only be
one Outlook on a computer at any point in time, the remnants cause you
trouble with 2007.
Running Office Diagnostics from 2007 should normally resolve those
issues permanently.

Thanks Patrick... I haven't had time to work on it since last night, but
that will be the first thing I un-install this morning.

WELL, I restored my system to a previous date, completely uninstalled Office
2003, and Viola! Office 2007 B2 started working again - UNTIL I installed
the technical refresh! THEN I got the same error message AGAIN. I installed
the refresh because I was in the process of installing Vista RC1. I then
completed the Vista install, uninstalled 2007 B2 completely, and then
reinstalled it. No luck - With or without the tech refresh. Same errors.
In Outlook 2007 B2, I get the "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot
initialize Microsoft Office Shared Utilities..." message, and in Word &
Excel, I get the "Not enough memory or disk space error."

Any ideas folks???

I am lost..what exactly do you have on your computer now? Vista RC1 with
B2TR? If yes, is this a clean install of Vista?

I had this happen while still having OL2003 installed and getting an
automated update to OL2003. Completely remove OL2003/Office 2003 and it
should be OK. Worked on three systems here.

Hi Patrick,

I'm sorry for the confusion. I am now running Vista RC1 with the Office
2007 (B2TR). Office will not start up at all, even after a complete
un-install and re-install. Same error message as before.

And Richard... I have completely removed Office 2003. No luck.

Is this a clean install of Vista, or did you upgrade from XP or a
previous Vista build?

I am not sure what the issue could be.
At this point, I'd suggest doing a clean install of Vista RC1...

Anyone else have any ideas?

Didn't work for me. I have the same problem. I removed all traces of OL
& Office (both 2003 & 2007), scoured my registry with regsupreme, and
deleted several registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Delivery\SourceEngine\Downloads
delete the following keys:

{30120000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C
{30120000-0015-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C
{30120000-0016-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C
{30120000-0018-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C
{30120000-0019-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C
{30120000-001A-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C
{30120000-001B-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C
{30120000-0044-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C
{30120000-006E-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C

This allowed me to reinstall Office 2007 (setup continually crashed).
But I cannot open any apps without getting the memory error nor outlook
without the MS shred utilities error.

Really frustrating. I've spent too many days on this. If anyone has any
ideas, please post...

I have not had any problems with auto updates for over a year, but KB8945442
& KB921580 will not install at all. All the other updates downloaded at the
same time installed withour problem.I don't think I have changed anything on
my laptop, and I have tried downloading the separate update files and
launched them, still without success. What else can I try?

Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Change Microsoft Office 2003 (or
Outlook). Remove Outlook 2003 from your computer.
Then run repair on Office 2007.
Have you installed B2TR? If not, it would be a good idea to do that
after the repair.

Did you get this worked out? I'm having the same issues that you and JKenny
had. I just built a new computer to test all the beta stuff. It's a STRONG
build (Core 2 E6600, 2GB RAM 800MHz, PCI-E 256MB Video, 250GB SATA, etc.) I
loaded XP-x64 on my main partition, I have an exteneded partition for most of
my programs that can also be used when running Vista RC1 5728 which was
loaded on a third clean partition. I loaded Office2007 Beta2 and Visio on
the third/VISTA partition (Outlook 2003 is on the second partition but was
ONLY installed from XP-x64 OS). Everything installed great. I set up
Outlook with an Exchange and LOVE the new look. It worked fine for a day at
least.

Now I'm getting the same errors you and NavyMustang got. For Outlook
"Cannotstart Microsoft Outlook. Cannot initialize Microsoft Office shared
utilities. Restart your computer or reinstall Micro..." For Word and Excel
"Not enought memory or disc space to load..." I can't exactly remember may
have added the Beta2TechRefresh just before this error occured, but I
could've loaded the update and still been okay for a while. Here are the
things I've done since Office last worked.

1.) I MIGHT have loaded the TechRefresh, but I might also have been
successful with it.
2.) Tried installing ActiveSync 4.2, but quit install when warned by
Updater. Found out that I won't be able to sync for a few weeks (kinda
annoyed, but at least I have XP)
3.) Upgraded my new RAM modules to even NEWER RAM Modules. Went from 800MHz
to 1000MHZ DDR2 and also switched from single to DUAL CHANNEL mode. Ran
Memory checker and RAM checked out OK.
4.) Tried to install a WebCam, but the drivers are apparently not
compatible.
5.) Loaded Logitech Keyboard & Mouse Software. Got a little error after
installation, but everything works.

Later Noticed Office wasn't working.

6.) Restored the Office installation. STILL NOT WORKING
7.) Uninstalled TechRefresh. STILL NOT WORKING
8.) Ran the "Repair" in Outlook. STILL NOT WORKING
9.) Tried to uninstall Logitech software, but installer/uninstaller never
loads.
10.) Tried to uninstall Webcam software, but installer/uninstaller never
loads.
11.) Lowered my RAM clock speed to 800MHz like it was the day before when
everything workd. STILL OFFICE NOT WORKING

My next steps will be to completely uninstall ALL Office products and
reinstall, but you had little success with that. I wonder if swtiching my
RAM configuration messed things up. Could there be a bug in 2007 that
doesn't map Dual channel RAM correctly? NAH, that's a Hardware layer issue.
Office wouldn't touch that, right? My system runs everything including
Adobe's Creative Suite without a problem.

I would appreciate any info that leads me to fixing this problem. If not I
may have to reload Vista from scratch, and that's just a pain.

Here are a few things:
- if you want to run 2003 and 2007 at the same time, install 2003 first
then 2007. While 2007 is installed, DO NOT touch the 2003 installation
(meaning running 2003 setup)
- you can only have one version of Outlook installed. 2007 setup has
some issues with removing 2003, so remove it yourself before trying to
install 2007
- if you have B2TR installed, the about dialog should say
12.0.4407.1003. Beta 2 was 12.0.4017.1006
- AFAIK, there is/will be a Vista program that handles
PocketPCs/SmartPhones. I don't think ActiveSync is designed for Vista
- AFAIK, Logitech isn't providing Vista drivers yet, so you are prob.
using XP drivers
- TR cannot be uninstalled. I don't know what you removed, but it must
have been Office 2007 altogether

My suggestion? Wipe that partition clean and start from scratch. I'd
also use Visa 32bit, because it seems to have better driver support than
the 64bit version right now.

I had the same problem because i downloaded the compatibility pack for older
versions of word to open files i had made in the office 2007 btr2 once i
removed it, i was back up and running again.
