New Word 2002 installation is operating at a slow crawl

I have made sure that the journal is not on, turned off everything in options
that could be affecting it (that I know of) and IS has re-installed it. It is
not slow opening, it does not crash. It just operates so slowly that you can
watch the page re-compose on the screen with each mouse click. Sometimes it
will get back to normal for a few keystrokes, then goes back to bad again.
Things that should happen in a heartbeat are taking up to a minute or more to
take place. Some of the toolbars are almost grayed even though they are
actually available. This is all happening on a new computer (3.40 Ghz w 504
MB of RAM) with a new install of Windows XP and Office 2002. I can't get my
work done like this! None of the other programs are working this way, and
Word is behaving like this on all the files I have opened so far.

If anyone has a clue, please offer some suggestions.

Thanks!

This is usually because the printer and/or graphics drivers need updating or
reinstalling. Or maybe Word cannot find a printer driver?

Just to let you know how this turned out. It was a driver all right - a video
driver. We had to use one other than the default the computer came with. I
guess the first guy on the scene was not our "top" IT guy. When the "top" guy
saw it, he knew what it was.
