new word template bloats to 9 mb with one word in body

Brad Sayers

I began using a new word template (dot file) I created with my business logo
/ banner in the header and a smaller image in the footer. The template file
itself is 464k. However, if I open it and "save as" with just one word of
normal text, it grows to almost 9 mb in size....it seems that this is not
correct behavior.

Any ideas on this?

TIA, Brad

How big (file size) are the images? If you manually size a large graphic to
a smaller size it doesn't reduce the file size of the graphic. If that's the
case, resize the images in a graphics program and see if that helps.

Also, take a look under File/Properties and on the Summary tab, make sure
"Save preview picture" is not selected.

If the above doesn't correct the problem then what version of Word are you
using?

Hi Beth.....turning off the "Save preview picture" solved my problem!!

Is there a way to have this unchecked by default?

BTW, I am using Word 2002.

One more item, related to these images in this template:

My understanding is that if I take an existing file, and attach this new
template to it, the images will carry over. However, they do not.

Am I doing something wrong? I go to Tools, Templates and Add-ins, Attach my
business letterhead template (with the images), then check Automatically
update document styles.

I thought that might be it -- thanks for the update. :)

To turn off the Save Preview picture option automatically in documents
created using the template then it needs to be removed from the File
Properties in the template itself. IOW, the documents are simply "copying"
the option from the template.

Unfortunately, that's not how a template works. They work more like a cookie
cutter. Once the cookie has been cut any changes to the cookie cutter (for
example if you dent it) will not effct cookies that have already been cut.
The change will only effect newly cut cookies.

Unlike a cookie, there are some changes you can make to documents that were
previously through the template and those are in the Styles. In a nutshell,
styles are named formats that are used to format your document and consist
of paragraph and font formatting - not content such as text and images. For
more on styles see: http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/TipsOnStyles.html

Additionally, if you still have the "Automatically update document styles"
option turned on you may want to turn it off. Otherwise you (or the
recipients of your documents) could encounter unexpected formatting changes.
