NEWBIE ALERT - Digital Pictures

R

Reactor

Hi,

When I need to email pictures to someone, I go to the folder that they are
located in, highlight the pix I want to send, then right-click > send to
email recipient. I am then asked if I want to make the pix smaller and
therefor my email message smaller.

This is all well and good, but how do I compress the pictures in a similar
manner without emailing them? I need to post a bunch of pix to a very basic
web site
with limited space and bandwidth so I want to keep them small but not post a
bunch of rar or zip files. I have about 130 pix to post.

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with 400+ jpeg all over 1mb in size from digital
camera and I found that using the autothumbprint worked great. It was not
possible to do all 400 as I ran out of memory. I had to convert about 100
at a time.

Drop about 1/2 of your pic onto a blank page, then do a "select all", right
click and do an "autothumbnail" All the files will end up with the phrase
"_small_" or so in the file name. Then cut and paste them to where you
want them to go. Repeat for next 1/2 or whatever until you are finished.
When finished you can zip them up. You could auto make an animated gif out
of all of them.

You need a graphics program like PhotoShop or PaintShop Pro. Then you
re-size the pictures (ex: 600 pixels width), import them into your site and
insert them onto your page.

I've never heard of that one before Tom. Interesting since their site claims
it's the most popular worldwide :)

I highly recommend Irfanview.

My wife - a computer novice - uses it with great ease just about every day.

It is great for resizing for the web. Note that it also optimises images -
you get a sliding scale to choose from when saving JPEGs. 75% is about
right.

You must have been hiding under a rock the past few years, Dave ;-)
Irfanview is hot and used by many. I've used it for years.

Guess so :) I've always used PhotoShop so I've never really looked around
for another program. I guess everyone has their favorites. As long as it
does the job.

It is a most excellent (and free) program, super fast at batch processing,
renaming, optimizing...its a must have in your toolbox.
Much easier to batch process photos in IrFanview than in PS.

I have yet to use it, but it is popular around here. Even my
manager uses it successfully.

I personally use the "Image Resizer" powertoy for XP,
available with all of the other goodies here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

All it takes is a right click on the file, and choose
resize. Works with a group of selected files also

When resizing a group it adds a space to the name of the jpeg eg:
10/10/2006 12:28 PM 51,978 100_1624 (Small).JPG
09/28/2006 03:09 PM 1,287,982 100_1624.JPG

The space before the " (Small)" plays havoc on those hosts that can't handle
special characters in file names. Publishing fails with some generic error
message and you have no idea why.

The resizer did run significently faster than the frontpage scheme I used in
my response to the original post. However, frontpage's resizer does not use
a space before the phrase "small"

Thanks for the link to the power tools, I had forgotten about them.
Unaccountably, when I attempted to install, it wanted to download
dotnetfx.exe and failed every time I attempted to install it. A repair of
2.0 didnt help. I then downloaded dotnetfx.exe, the v1.1 one, and that
finally allowed the power tool to be installed. I must have put in dotnet
2.0 and never updated the 1.0 to 1.1. I assume the problem with the power
tools was they used 1.1 but when they went to get dotnetfx.exe it got the
latest 2.0 from microsoft??? Strange and I am just guessing, but it is now
working. I will also look at the irfanview and see what it can do also.

**I have all my pictures out of the web, and I create a
subfolder for all of the smaller versions with copies of all
the images. I use the advanced options and choose to replace
the existing file. This eliminates the picture (small).jpg
issue, as it saves using the original name- picture.jpg
