Newbie: Links between projects

S

Simon Willis

I have a number of Project 98 plans that are linked. When
I open a plan, the 'Links Between Projects in {filename}'
window is displayed, showing external predecessors and
external successors.

My query is:

1) What are the different entries that could appear in the
Type column (e.g. FS, is one entry)?
2) Is there a definitive list of messages that could
appear in the 'Differences column' (e.g. 'file not
found', 'create external', etc.)
3) Can anyone recommend a good site where I can find this
type of information?

Simon,
Probably the best and easiest way to learn more about external linking
is to check the built-in help file. Unfortunately Project 98 does not
have a "help" button directly on the Links between Projects window like
Project 2000, so you will have to look for the info yourself. Use the
index tab on the general Project help window to find the topic on "links
between projects". It has a wealth of information although sometimes you
have to dig a little to find answers to specific questions.

To answer your specific questions, the "Type" column refers to the
predecessor/successor modifier. There are 4 possible types - FS
(finish-to-start), SS (start-to-start), FF (finish-to-finish), and SF
(start-to-finish). The "Differences" column shows information about any
changes to the predecessor task that have not yet been updated in the
current project. For example, new start or finish dates of the external
predecessor.

Hope this helps.

John
