Newbie needs help with linked graphics

Andrew

Hello,
I am working on a publisher file which used to be on another
computer. I have the .pub file on my computer now. It has three
pages of pictures. In publisher, the page looks great. But when I
check the "web page preview", there are no graphics. Can someone tell
what I might have done, and how I can undo it? I do not have access
to the other computer anymore.

thanks,
andy

What version of Publisher?

In Publisher 2000 you would first need to do a "Save as a website"
This would create an image file for each graphic in the Webpage/s

If the problem is because of the linking to the pictures, you might try
selecting an image, right click, save as a picture, (note the Resolution,
and change to 96 dpi if it is something else), and save as a jpg, assuming
the original was a jpg, save the image to a folder on your new computer.
Then right click the image again, change picture, from file and browse to
where you stored the image, and insert, don't link, the newly saved image
back into your page. Do a web page preview to test, and if it works, you can
do the same for each picture. The right click save as an image option is
available in Pub 2003 and 2007.

Another thought...if you copied the original images over to the new
computer, you might not have to do as I suggested. Instead just right click
the image > Change picture > from file and browse to where the original
images are stored on your new computer. I would still suggest that you
insert/embed the images instead of linking them. This will prevent this
problem in the future, and your backup Publisher files will work where ever
you move them or the original pictures. It is my understanding that linking
the images does not reduce the file size of the Publisher file, so there is
no advantage of linking the images in Pub 2003 or 2007. Different story with
Pub 2000...

About the pictures... I resized them before I tried to publish. Also,
I'm using Publisher 2003.

I have a solution, and a new problem. The solution has to do with the
rendering differences between Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
The website was being generated "properly." All I did was switch over
to Internet Explorer from Mozilla and there is was, exactly like it
was supposed to be. But now the site can only be viewed with IE.
Does Publisher save files in format that can only be read by IE. I'm
pretty sure I've made pages that were viewable with Firefox. Any
ideas?

thanks,

Go to Tools > Options > Web tab and uncheck "Rely on VML..." and "Allow
png..." and test again in FF.

It is good that you are testing in both IE and FF. People using IE has
dropped to 67.55% and FF increased to 21.53%, and if you can get your site
to render well in both, then it will also render ok in Safari and Opera and
most other browsers.

We have worked out most of the cross browser issues between IE and FF, so if
you run up against something else, post again but always include the version
of Publisher, the browser and version, and a link to your site, so we can
see the problem.

You said that you resized the images. In case you did not optimize and
resize them before you inserted them, then you should compress them.

Reference: Compress graphics file sizes to create smaller Publisher Web
pages (2003):
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA011266301033.aspx

This will also improve the quality of the images in FF and improve load
time.
