newbie: pointers for developing a VB/Visio app

Hi !

I am just starting up with Visio and I would like to build an app that
basically maintains a db with products and uses visio as a configurator,
i.e., :

The app would provide for db management (also import from excel and other,
user profiling etc) and then would call Visio so that people could put some
custom shapes on the drawing, assign products to the shapes (from a dropdown
list that would appear with products relevant to that shape) and then
generate a qty list of the required configuration (product/qty/price) that
would be processed by the host app.

This seems ideal for a VB.NET app with the activex visio control but I am a
little confused.

Can anyone give me feedback on the best approach to develop this ?
Does anyone point me to code/docs that could provide me with a jumpstart on
this ?
