newbie: problem installing sr1-a onto XP machines

I can't install sr-1a onto win Xp. It gets to the end of the install
then says that insatller terminated. It then won't install again as it
says it is already installed but when i try to install service pack 3
it says it needs sr1-a.
Any idea what i am doing wrong?
