Newby to Project - some initial questions

Hello - I have read many of the postings in the various Project discussion
groups and it appears this Server group is where I should start. I have been
given the responsibility to research a project or task managment system for
our department. We have been a little hesitant to use MS Project becuase it
seems to be overkill and a big learning curve for us to use. However, I have
installed Project Server 07 with the intent that we (3 Directors each with
several team members) could just use the Project Web Access. I hoped to be
able to avoid the Project Pro application and just use the web interface. I
have played with it for some 20 hours or more now (no manuals of course) and
I am not convinced yet we can go this route. Before I begin to post
additional questions on this discussion area, I feel that I need to first
determine if Project Web Access will do what we need. We desire our project
management system to be web accessible as our first priority and we need the
document sharing and team discussion that workplaces provide. However, we
need it to be simple with no need for time tracking (at least at this point)
or other overhead items that Project offers. The directors just need to be
able enter a project with the task(s) associated to it and assign some not so
strigent deadlines which in our technology support business are usually a
moving target. Then assign the tasks and be able to give and get simple
status updates on the tasks until they are completed. I have been fumbling
with PWA for many hours and just when I think it is the perfect fit for our
needs I run into stumbling blocks trying to do simple things such as adding a
note to a task that isn't assigned to me...etc. Ok, enough typing I think
you understand - any feedback is much appreciated. DJ

Do you have a list of the requirements for your project managment system?
If not, you may want to do this and ensure that you get buy-in from
stakeholders (in effect forming a contract and calibrating their
expectations). I would evaluate PWA MSPS07 based on this list and report my
findings.

I suspect that you will need Project Pro. PWA is great for distal access and
reporting numbers and project pro is the preferred interface for more
complicated tasks like scheduling.

Thank you Raymond for your response. Yes, but they are short and pretty much
what I described so I will trudge onward with Project Server PWA. Do you
know if there are any helpful books or online material about PWA specifically?
