News command missing in Office 2003

DaveR

Hi all.

I have installed the new Office Pro 2003 and have had no problems other than
trying to use newsgroups in Outlook. Earlier today, I did what the online
help suggested and dragged the news command to the go menu. Dropped it in to
place and was able to go online and use the newsgroups. Great I thought, But
when I had to go back on later in the day, the News command was missing. So
tried to do what I did previously, but found the news command was also
missing from the GO menu. Tried all options from the online help, but no
luck. Even tried a repair reinstall of the Office program. No joy there
either. So back to trusty old outlook Express to see if anyone can help me
out.
All help on this would be appreciated.

I've noticed "News" disappearing off the Outlook Go menu too, but it
returned of its own accord. It just launches OE anyway so I didn't get too
steamed about it.

Please respond in the same thread on this newsgroup. Make sure you
include details of your application and Windows versions, and whether
or not you have included any service pack updates.

Hi Mike.
I'm not getting steamed about it, but when you get a new program and it
worked to start with, then it disappears. I'd like to know what's causing
this problem. I didn't think it used OE as the news reader, though I could
be mistaken.Still, I'd like the option back in Outlook as it's a bit silly
having to open up two programs to do what OE did by itself before. And it
was a free program, not $1200 like this one.

I believe Outlook is just checking for the registered newsreader and calling
that - it still doesn't have a built-in newsreader.

You might want to check the settings in IE Tools > Internet Options >
Programs

This happened to me too. The news link just disappeared and its nowhere to
be found in the 'customise' dialogue.
I ended up creating a shortcut to OE in newsreader mode ...
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews
.... and putting that on my quick launch taskbar until my shortcut to news in
Outlook magically reappears again.

The Outlook MVPs and Microsoft are looking into this. We will report back as
we have seen a number of reports of News going missing from the toolbar as
well as the menu choices when customizing.

One question: When you first used the News button and it called OE, were
you presented with an option to make OE your default news reader? We think
that this has something to do with the disappearing News button.

In the meantime, you can close Outlook, find and rename outcmd.dat to .old,
then reopen Outlook and the option should be back. If it happens again,
please note what steps you took, what dialogs you were presented with , etc.
and report it back in the Outlook news group if you please.

Hi Millie.

Not sure what came up the first time I hit news, But I'm pretty sure I would
have made whatever came up as the default.
I tried what you suggested, closed Outlook, renamed outcmd.dat to .old and
then tried it again. Afraid there was still no news in Go or in the
customizing command menu which would have allowed me get it going again.
Are they going to make Outlook have it's own News Reader and not rely on
OE.Being a first timer with Outlook (which I love) I would have thought It
would have been street's ahead of OE.
Anyway, It's nice to hear you are looking into the problem and hope to hear
from you soon.
Thanks Dave

Hi.
Here's an update that I've found since the last post.
I made OE the default News client and as soon as I'd done that I noticed
that when I started Outlook again and checked in the Go Customize menu,News
was back.
So, after trying out a few things, I have found that if you make Outlook the
Default news reader you will lose it.
Leave OE as the default and clicking No in the "Make Outlook the default
box" every time you click News in Outlook will keep it in the Go menu. So,
until you sort the problem out, that's what I'm going to have to do.
Hope that helps you sort it out.

I've done a bit of experimenting too and I've found that if I go into IE6
internet options and set OE to be the default newsreader in the programs tab
(it had become unallocated) then everything has returned to normal and now I
can launch OE from Outlook and not get prompted to make it the default
newshandler.

Hi Ali.
Checked and found IE6 has OE as the News Reader as I had already made it the
reader of choice.
You still get Outlook saying that it's not the default reader which it isn't
as OE is.
Even saying NO to Outlook brings up OE with Microsoft Newsreader on the top.
