Just switching to MAC from a PC and like it. I could use a few answers on
using Entourage as my newsreader if possible please?
I'm coming from using OE 6.0 on a PC as my newsreader. Is there a way in
Entourage to set up so that when switching from newsgroup to newsgroup on
the bar only the new headers are downloaded instead of having the program
read the entire list. It seems to take a very long time for each group to
load.
Also, when entering a thread and posting on it, is there a way to set up in
settings so that when you reopen the group, the threads you are involved in
will show on the top? This was a "watched thread function" in OE and even
the color could be changed. If you selected to watch a thread, that thread
would open at the top of the list with new postings not involving your
thread listed below your watched threads.
Many thanks for any assistance on this. If anyone has a suggestion for a
good upgraded newsreader for MAC, please feel free to suggest it if
Entourage won't do these things.

Welcome to the Mac, Dudley.

Tip: Use a nospam address when posting to newsgroups.

Not sure what you mean by "on the bar".

You can set number of headers to download. Open News account under Tools -->
Accounts in the menu bar. Under the Options tab set the number of headers.

I'm sorry to report that Entourage's news function is limited. It's main
functionality is the convenience of having it in Entourage.

You could use a Rule to identify a message that you created.

From Contains [your address]

Change status Flagged (or set to a category that will color the message)

If you create a rule, make sure it is a News rule.

Hi Diane, and thanks for the warm welcome. Let me expand a bit so we're on
the same page with this, as explaining it can be confusing at best :)
What's happening is that everytime I switch from one newsgroup to another
then back again, the server seems to be downloading the entire list again
instead of just the new headers since the last time I clicked on the group.
For example, with 5689 messages showing on the left side next to the group,
the download when clicked lasts several minutes, then perhaps the number
changes by just a few, which would be the new headers since last clicked.
I have the settings set at 300 which should be default but that should
relate to obtaining additional headers as a choice shouldn't it, rather than
every time the group is clicked????
What I'm trying to say is that I'd like to be able to just download the new
headers only instead of the 300 each time. Can this be done?
Thanks

Hi Dudley!

I believe this is what you want to do.

The first time you download messages from a particular newsgroup they
are all UNread and you're probably not receiving the full list of
messages. Keep clicking the "More" button at the top until all the
messages are download the first time.

Then, read through what you want. You may want o sort by date and only
read the newer messages.

Then, click the "Mark All Read" button at the top to mark every message
as having been read.

Finally, what I like to do is hide read messages (View menu --> Unread
Only). The next time you access the group, only the new messages will be
visible to you. As Diane suggested, you can create a Rule to flag
messages from you but Entourage does not have a "Watched" feature. I
miss this too from Outlook.

Hope this helps! bill

Thank you very much. I'll give this a try. I guess if all else fails, I can
get Netscape for Mac which will expand individual replies and allow a
watched format at the top of the list.
