NG rule to mark entire thread to watch

Using OL2003 on winxp pro sp2.
If I create a newsgroup rule to watch for and color messages with my name
in the "from" , it works however it will only mark the whole THREAD for
watch if I am the first one listed or the creator of the thread.
If I reply to a message originated by someone else, the message I send
is marked, but not the thread, which makes the name of the NG change color
per the rule, indicating that I have a message in there somewhere, but the
thread itself isn't marked to watch so I have to use FIND to locate it.
How can I make the thread (conversation) get marked anytime my name is
found in the thread on the "from" line?

See the eyeglasses next to the subject line? Click under it (next to the thread you want to watch).

hit ctrl+h to show only threads you are involved in. if you group by
conversation it makes it easer to view your threads IMHO.

but the problem is that there is no notification that I am involved in them.
The thread doesn't get marked by the rule (the glasses don't appear) if I am
not the one who initiated it.

I have such a rule and it marks (almost) all of the replies to my message
red and changes the color of the newsgroup name when there's an unread
message marked watched.

Since Newsgroups are read using OE and are , in this case, OE is invoked by
OL2003, your request is ridiculous.

Yes exactly the same here, but have you ever found that the NG is marked
red, but there are no threads shown when you sort by the "glasses" icon?
It's not that they they have scrolled off the list, but rather are just
unmarked.
If you do a "find" to find your message, you will then notice that while
your particular contribution to the thread is marked, and the thread title
is highlighted, the entire thread isn't marked and so doesn't get the
"glasses" icon that you can then sort by.
The reply you just gave me is an example, If your rule acts like mine,
your message will be marked, but the entire conversation won't be and it
needs to be marked to get the icon. So how can you watch this conversation
for changes without marking it manually?
Does that make sense?

In conversation view, press Ctrl+H and you'll see the entire thread (Show
All Messages if you normally hide read messages).

I am using "group by conversation" and it works perfectly if I start the
conversation. the entire thread will show up and everything.
But if I just reply to some thread, trying to give some input, that thread
will not always get marked So I never know if my reply helped or if there
are more questions. That is unless I mark it myself.
Lets see if I can make the tree visually. I can see I am not being clear.
The conversation tree goes like this:

someones question
- someone elses reply
- someone else rreply
- my reply

The rule says that if my name is in the "from" line mark it to watch and
color it red, and it will. But the conversation title "someones question"
doesn't get marked. So what happens is that I will have a marked reply in an
umarked thread. That makes the newsgroup title in the left pane change
color, but in the right side the conversation that has my reply in it
doesn't get marked, so I have to find it manually.

It only colors the newsgroup red if there are unread watched messages.

Why use a "rule" at all? The nest time you go to that group, "watch" your message and the others will be marked as well.

When you reply to a thread mark it watched, the message headers will turn red, or whatever color you select, and be easy to find.

yes I understand that they have to be unread. but sometimes it can be days
or weeks before the thread gets active again and I am not alerted to that
fact except that in some cases the NG turns red but I can't see which
conversation made it turn red because none of them are red (well actually
read and bold in the case of unread).

Thats what I do now, but the rule is supposed to do it's job and doesn't.
