No access to equation symbols?

I have just installed the student version of 2004 Word for mac v 11.2
in a mac G5 and in following the help screen instruction to click on:
insert/object/microsoft equation, I'm stumped as "equation" is not
listed as one of my choices. I'm just trying to find a way to create
math symbols such as a squre root sign. Is there another way to do
this?

Thanks,
Rory

You probably have to install the equation editor as one of the optional
extras.
You can also use EQN fields. (see help)
If you really need to set good looking equations, go install all the
TeX stuff and get equation service from
http://www.esm.psu.edu:16080/mac-tex/EquationService/
(I think - it is not responding at the moment.)
Versiontracker is your friend.
You type in the TeX, it produces a PDF you can paste into word.
Finally, if you just want the square root glyph, then use the character
palette that come standard with OS X.
