No Auto Footer

Using a Path in the footer of a Word doc automatically updates as the
file moves locations. For some this is great, not for me.

If you use a path outside the footer, it doesn't auto-update.

Anyone know if the auto-update feature can be turned off in the
footer?

That Path is a field, so you can lock a field temporarily to keep it the
same until you manually update it, or permanently unlink it and make it
regular text.

From Help:

Lock or unlock a field
€ To lock a field and prevent changes to the current field results, click
the field, and then press z+F11.
€ To unlock a field and allow updates, click the field, and then press
z+SHIFT+F11.

Unlink a field
€ Click the field, and then press z+SHIFT+F9.
Note Once a field is unlinked, the current field result is regular text.
If you later want to update the information, you must insert the field
again.

A note for people who see "z+F11" etc in Dayo's narrative below.

In the instructions, Dayo will have made the keystrokes respectively:
Command+F11, Command+Shift+F11 and Command+Shift+F9.

My guess is that for the "Command" element she may have used a character
that shows the "pretzel" (Command symbol), perhaps invoked by a modifier key
in conjunction with z. But not everyone will have the font (or maybe it
just doesn't translate through the software? -- I'm ignorant on this).
Hence, like me, they will see "z" instead of "Command".

I once got caught using some characters that lost themselves like this
(including innocent curly quotes pasted from some notes in Word) until
somebody pointed it out. I couldn't see the problem displayed myself, of
course.

I may have got the cause wrong, Dayo, but in any event, "z" is what I'm
seeing. Thought you'd like to know!

Cheers,

Clive Huggan

Thanks much, Clive, I had just copied it from Help (which uses the pretzel)
and didn't notice the changes. I'll be more careful next time.
