No auto spell-check in word?

Hello.
I recently installed office 2008 (student edition), and I can't get Word to recognize incorrectly spelled words. It refuses to underline them, or even pick them up during document spellcheck. I have checked preferences, and it looks as if they are set correctly. I am currently writing my graduate thesis and am going crazy with editing, HELP!!

It's not preferences you have to check, but the language formatting.
