No, your problem is not the key, your problem is that the update has found
two installations and it's confused as to which one is the real one.
Remove the second drive (or disable the network so it can't "see" the other
installation) and try again and it should work.
The other thing that will stop it is if you do not install to the
Applications folder of the Boot partition. You can move the software later
if you must, but until you get it fully updated, the autoupdater cannot
handle the software being in an unexpected place.
The installation will work with any of the keys, you just won't be able to
run the software unless you use an unused key

Many thanks. I actually did try that after I posted my query and it didn't
work. It then occurred to me that I had used the particular key on a laptop I
no longer own. Now I need to figure out how to remove a copy from one of the
two hard drives on my desktop and use that key, which should work, no?
