No "categorize" option when I right click on a message - Outlook 2

C

camotto

I am not connected to an Exchange server (not sure if that's relevant).

I do not have a Categorize option when I right click on a message. I've
tried adding the categorize option to the toolbar but it is not available as
one of the options when I go to customize the toolbar - it appears in every
other window (calendar, tasks, etc.)

Any ideas?

Thanks!

2007 - sorry - put it in subject line but it got cut off.

I'm pretty sure I'm using Word as the editor - but forget how to verify that.

Outlook 2007 only has one editor - it uses word.

What commands do you see when you right click?
This is what you should see -

(except for auto-mate and maybe send to onenote)

Diane,

Thanks for clarifying the editor issue - good for me to know.

Between Follow Up and Mark as Read there is nothing in between - no
categorize.

? - weird right - not sure if it's relevant but I don't want to leave
anything out - I have the BCM version.

Well, BCM could be the reason but I don't see it on my BCM installation - I
have categories in BCM and in outlook.

oh... what type of email account? do you have the quick click category

Diane,

They're all IMAP...guess that clears up the issue.

What is the main difference between POP3 and IMAP? Or, can you recommend me
to a good article?

I'm just wondering if it might be worth making them POP3 accounts (I can do
that, right?)

if your isp supports pop, yes you can make pop. The big question is why did
you choose imap? There are definite benefits to using it but not everyone
needs those benefits, so most people use pop. The big advantage is imap
stores the mail on the server so you can get the mail from anywhere - its
sorta like an exchange server, but is mail only.

I chose IMAP because it's newer than POP, basically, so I assumed, newer is
better...

And I like the idea of being able to access my email from anywhere.

HOWEVER - I might not be understanding 100% how it all works because now
that I think about it I could still access my mail when not at home. So for
example - for my AOL accounts - I could access through www.aol.com. For my
other account (provided through my web hosting service) I could use webmail.

So if I could access my mail these ways, how is IMAP benefitting me? Aren't
I in essence able to get mail from anywhere? Or does anywhere really mean
from more than one PERMANENT pc?

IMAP allows you to see *all* mail from any pc using any email client.
Webmail works fine for new mail, but you'd need to leave mail on the server
to see everything in the inbox. If you routinely use 2 or more computers
you can use imap to have all the mail on all computers.

If you want to try pop, I recommend setting outlook to leave mail on the
server so its there if you decide to switch back to imap. Also - keep the
imap configured - either make a new profile for the pop account or add it to
the current profile. When you decide which you prefer you can delete the
other acct.

Thank you Diane and Brian for your input.

I am freaking out a little bit because I created a new profile and now the
emails that were in my inbox in my old/regular/IMAP profile are gone.

I created a new profile checking the SAME email account, but using POP. I
tested it a little bit, saw the functionality of being able to categorize in
color. I then logged out of that profile and went back in to my regular
profile.

When I first signed in to Outlook, I saw my emails in the inbox, but they
quickly disappeared. I signed in to webmail and I don't see them there
either.

What could've happened here?

I would appreciate your help - did I mention I am freaking out a little?

Thanks in advance.

The default behavior for POP accounts is to download messages from the server
and delete them. Unless you modified the account settings when you created it
to leave messages on the server, that's likely what happened. If you want
them back on the server, you'll have to connect again using IMAP and copy them
back.
