no connector sites on flowchart boxes

When I try to create a flowchart, no connector sites show up on the boxes ro
I can't lock the connectors.

I don't have Visio, but the Help information in Word doesn't imply that I
need it in order to create a simple chart. Does anyone know what the problem
might be?

Connectors are only active when you're in the Drawing Canvas. To
enable the Drawing Canvas, click on Tools | Options | General |
check the "Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting
AutoShapes" box | OK.
