No Contact folder or contacts but suggested addresses O.K.

Outlook 2003 only one profile.

I have a number of PST folders in the 'normal' Docs & Settings etc. folder
and in other areas, most are Outlook 2002 format, only one (the current one)
in Outlook 2003 format. I recently moved mail & calendar to this new PST
folder O.K.

When I select My Contacts 'Contacts' I get a blank listing but added
contacts go there, the folder list does not show a contacts folder.

I have tried removing and adding both Outlook and Personal address book
files via the Control Panel > Mail>Email Accounts>'View or Change existing
directories or Address book' route - but all books appear to be blank.

Here's the weird thing as far as I am concerned - when composing an Email.
suggested addresses pop up as usual but no contact list when To: is clicked.
If I right click the Email address and select 'Add to contacts' the full
contact sheet appears. At the moment this is the only way I can access the
old contact list - very cumbersome {:))

Any suggestions about WHERE the full old list is located? Is there a
registry entry pointing to the path?

Many TIA - JohnS

You failed to convey the view to which you are referring.
Use the Folder List view to help you understand how you managed to
misconfigure your profile. The format of your PST file is not in play here.

Hi Russ...

Unfortunately I really don't understand your question. As I said, I have no
contacts in the folder list and it doesn't matter what contacts view I try -
there are no contacts displayed. The only indication that my contacts list
is not completely lost is that suggested Email contacts are shown when
creating a message.

All advice gratefully received - JohnS

What you claim is not possible. You cannot run Outlook without having at
least one Contacts Folder. State what view you are using. State the steps
you used to cause the problem. Then do as I suggested: use Folder List view
so you can see all your folders. See the icons at the bottom of the
Navigation Pane? Hover over each. Then click the one that says "Folder
List."

Your autocompletion cache has nothing whatsoever to do with your Contacts.

Russ..

My current view is Messages. On the left hand side of the screen I am
showing "All mail Folders". I can change to "All Folders" in the Navigation
pane and can see the Contacts folder. Learned something there - why on earth
provide two similar but not identical lists......

Anyhow - As expected, clicking on the contacts folder shows a blank list. I
can add new contacts to this folder.

I also learned that the autocompletion cache (.nk2 file) is nothing to do
with contacts - thanks for that.

I suspect I caused the problem by trying to tidy up the data files in the
File>Data file management list where I had possibly 10 pst files (mostly
named 'Personal Folders before I learned how to change the names). I have
added most of these back to the data file management list. They are all
Outlook 2002 format except for my default data file which is Outlook 2003
format. One of the extra .pst folders cannot be opened from the folder list.
It gives the error message "The set of folders could not be opened". I have
run the scanpst utility - but opening the folder invokes the same error
message. Is it possible that the 'lost' contact data is located in that
folder?

Thank you for your help - JohnS

Hi Russ...

This is a nightmare. It's beginning to look as though I have lost my 400-500
contacts laboriously collected over the last 8-10 years.

I have NOT deleted any PST file only removed them from the data file
management list. I have tried all the PST files I can find and only a few
have contacts folders which are blank.
I also have several system backups using Acronis and SyncBack. Not much
point in using the SyncBack ones as it is overwritten with new data. But the
Acronis ones are from well before I lost the contact folder by migrating
from Outlook2002 to 2003. I restored the old pst file from the Acronis
Backup - did not overwrite the existing files, renamed the recovered files
with a meaningful name and then added them to Outlook 2003 using the
File>Data File Management>Add function. I can see the Contact folder in the
restored PST file in the folder view but the contents display blank. This is
from a file prior to any changes. What am I doing wrong?
Forgetting the restored file for a moment - I still have 2 folders named
Personal folders in my Folder list which I can't open - perhaps they might
have Contact folders, even containing some Contact info. It would be great
if I could find a way to fix those folders, but I am beginning to loose
hope.
Again - any more suggestions would be gratefully received.
Cheers - JohnS

Problem finally solved. A local Outlook user suggested that my problems with

No way was that the problem. Outlook 2003 is perfectly compatible with all
PST file types. Nor is importing ever the correct way to transfer Outlook
data.
What actually happened was that you finally find the file that contained
your data, and were lucky to get away with an import of that file's data.
Had you simply managed to find open the correct file in Outlook 2003,
everything would have been fine.

Hi again Russ...

I am sure you are right.

But it's nice to get my contacts back even if I used an incorrect method.

However I now have another problem.

When I add a new contact it goes to some other file than my default Outlook
contact file. I click Save and it disappears. How can I find out WHERE it
has gone?

TIA - JohnS

When I select My Contacts 'Contacts' I get a blank listing but
added contacts go there, the folder list does not show a contacts
folder.

I have tried removing and adding both Outlook and Personal address
book files via the Control Panel > Mail>Email Accounts>'View or
Change existing directories or Address book' route - but all books
appear to be blank.

Here's the weird thing as far as I am concerned - when composing an
Email. suggested addresses pop up as usual but no contact list when
To: is clicked. If I right click the Email address and select 'Add
to contacts' the full contact sheet appears. At the moment this is
the only way I can access the old contact list - very cumbersome
{:))

Any suggestions about WHERE the full old list is located? Is there
a registry entry pointing to the path?

Many TIA - JohnS

I am sure you are right.

But it's nice to get my contacts back even if I used an incorrect method.

When I add a new contact it goes to some other file than my default

Problem finally solved. A local Outlook user suggested that my problems
with viewing Contacts from restored backups might have been due to the
fact that the backups were in Outlook 2002 format and I was trying to
view with Outlook 2003. He suggested that I try an Import from the
restored file. Bingo - problem solved!

Sounds to me like you deleted the PST file that contained your

Just open each PST file you have using Outlook: File > Open > Outlook

My current view is Messages. On the left hand side of the screen I am
showing "All mail Folders". I can change to "All Folders" in the
Navigation pane and can see the Contacts folder. Learned something
there - why on earth provide two similar but not identical lists......

Anyhow - As expected, clicking on the contacts folder shows a blank
list. I can add new contacts to this folder.

I also learned that the autocompletion cache (.nk2 file) is nothing to
do with contacts - thanks for that.

I suspect I caused the problem by trying to tidy up the data files in
the File>Data file management list where I had possibly 10 pst files
(mostly named 'Personal Folders before I learned how to change the
names). I have added most of these back to the data file management
list. They are all Outlook 2002 format except for my default data file
which is Outlook 2003 format. One of the extra .pst folders cannot be
opened from the folder list. It gives the error message "The set of
folders could not be opened". I have run the scanpst utility - but
opening the folder invokes the same error message. Is it possible that
the 'lost' contact data is located in that folder?

Thank you for your help - JohnS

What you claim is not possible. You cannot run Outlook without having
at least one Contacts Folder. State what view you are using. State
the
steps you used to cause the problem. Then do as I suggested: use
Folder List view so you can see all your folders. See the icons at
the
bottom of the Navigation Pane? Hover over each. Then click the one
that says "Folder List."

Your autocompletion cache has nothing whatsoever to do with your
Contacts.

Hi Russ....
I create a new contact by either clicking on Contacts in the folder list (or
by opening Contacts from the Navigation panel) then selecting new from the
standard toolbar icon. Then after completing the Untitled contact form,
selecting 'save and close'.
I had to look up Profile (in the Outlook context) in help - and one part of
that has me confused. When opening the User accounts from the control
panel - Help states "In Control Panel, double-click User Accounts, and then
click Mail." But nowhere in the main UA window or window for my account (or
the administrator account window) is the word MAIL mentioned. It seems as
though Outlook is not associated with any UA.

Your profile is simply the instance of of Outlook you are currently running.
Use Folder List view so you can see every folder in your profile and see how
many Contact Folders you have.
There would be no reason for you to have a PAB in any Outlook profile. There
