No Customize Toolbar and Menu on my Word 2008 for Mac

I cannot customize the menus in Word 2008 on my Mac AT ALL. The option Customize Toolbar and Menu simply doesn't exist on my View menu -- it does for PPT and Excel but not Word. Do I have a faulty copy -- or is this a general fault?

Menus are stored in document templates, for most people the Normal
template.

If, with Word closed, you rename or delete the Normal.dotm template,
Word will create a new one when you next start it.

By default the Normal.dotm template is stored in the

~:Library:Application Support:Microsoft:Office:User Templates:

folder.

Hey thanks for replying. I'm not sure how this will address the issue. How does renaming my template make the Customize Toolbars and Menus command appear in the standard VIEW menu? Why isn't the command there in the standard template? I did not have to change the templates in PPT or Excel for this same command to be there.

Presumably you removed the Customize Toolbars and Menus command during a
previous customization. This change was then saved in the Normal
template.

If you had customized the menus while using a different document
template, the change would have been saved in that template instead.

As I wrote before, renaming the Normal template will cause Word to
generate a new one.

That new template will use Word's default internal settings. That means
that all the standard menu commands will be there.

XL and PPT use a different method for customizing menus and toolbars.

Hi Mark -You might try this first:

Control/Right-Click one of your toolbars & you should find the Customize
Toolbars & Menus... command available there. If so just go into the dialog,
on the Toolbars page click the name of the Menu Bar then click Reset. If
that doesn't correct it, go back in & on the Commands page locate the
Customize Toolbars & Menus... command [near the bottom of the Tools
Category] then drag it to the appropriate position in the Menu Toolbar's
View list [between Toolbars & Navigation Pane] - or put it wherever you
like:)

Yeah - I never recommend doing that because I *always* prefer to blow
away the Normal template. Frequently. Many times a day. Every time I
start Word...

Not as easy to live with in Word08, as previous versions, since I used
multiple global templates to modify menus and toolbars, keyboard
shortcuts, preferences, etc.

And since I *never* create a document based on Normal, it doesn't much
matter - any modifications I make to menus are stored in my document
templates anyway.

I fully understand - but not everyone is as intrepid as your esteemed
self:) It isn't so much a matter of preserving customizations as it is the
fact that it scares the livin' bejeezus out of many people to go digging
into the file cabinet with a carving knife. If you can stay within your
comfort zone to get it done, why not?;-)
