No File Types in Word 2007

When I go to open a file in Word 2007, the file-types box is completely
blank. How can I get Word to list the file types?

Thanks,
Sheila

Has it always been like this? I suggest starting by running the Diagnose
utility (under Word Options). If that fails, I would do a reinstall.

This is the trial version of the suite, and I just intalled it last week.
Yes, it has been that way from the beginning. I did run the Diagnose
utility, and it said it fixed something, but it still doesn't work. I also
uninstalled and reinstalled and the same thing happens. I guess I'll try to
download another copy and start all over.

Thanks,

I unistalled the whole office suite, deleted any references to Office 12 in
the registry and in any files, downloaded a new trial version, installed it,
installed the updates, and it STILL does the exact same thing!

Is there anything else I can try, or do I just have to give up on Office
2007?

Thanks,
Sheila

It sounds like there's a problem with your computer then. Do other Office
apps open and do they have a choice of file types in the Files Save dialog?

The other 2007 apps (Excel and Access) open fine and they do have all the
file types in the Files Save dialog. I am not experiencing any computer
problems. I still have Office 2000 installed and everything, including
Word, works correctly.

I don't get any error messages in Word 2007, but there is that awful sound
when I click on Open or Save or Save As.

I know I must be missing something...

See the following FAQ as it may lead to finding a problem:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

I am thinking that perhaps there is a legacy third party add-in that is
totally incompatible with Word 2007 causing this problem. The FAQ will show
you how to start Word in Safe Mode to see if it is an outside problem and
how to find which it is.

You are absolutely right! It was an old app that I really liked,
xfilesdialog, which gave me easy ways of opening files from whatever app I
was in. I found it by turning off every app I had, and there are lots, and
Word worked fine. Then I turned them on one at a time until it stopped
working. I disabled it, rebooted and Word works fine now.

Thank you so much!!!! It was driving me crazy! :)

The only other thing I notice is that my hard drive is working almost all
the time now. Is that normal for having Office 2007 installed?

It shouldn't but it may be because you need more memory so there is loads of
disk swapping activity. Use the Task Manager to monitor the memory to see
how much is being used. If more than the physical installed memory is
needed, it will work the disk overtime. You'll then need more memory. Office
2007 really needs at least 1GB.

OK, thanks Terry! I have 3 GB memory, and today the hard drive is acting
normally. So maybe it had to do with what was going on with the utility
yesterday. All is well now.

Again, thanks for helping me!!!!

If you are using Windows Visa, it was probably the Indexing system. You will
find that Search is infinitely faster and better in Vista, but if you
introduce a huge number of files, Vista will spend an age indexing them, but
once done, it doesn't need to do it again.
