No folders appear in the import/export wizard

Jerry Kaplan

I'm trying to export my contacts from Outlook 2003 into a Dos comma delimited
file.

Using the Import and Export Wizard, I select "Export to a file", then click
"next".

Then I select "Comma Separated Values (DOS)" and click "next".

The next screen says "Select filder to export from:". Under it is an empty
white box, and "next" is grayed out.

I certainly have numerous folders. In fact, if I select "Personal Folder
File (.pst)" instead of "Comma Separated Values (DOS)", the list of file
folders does appear on the next screen.

Any advice appreciated...

Are you certain you have the correct translator installed? This one is not
installed by default.
Mine displays the entire contents of my Personal Folders file and the export
goes without a hitch.

Russ -

Thanks for the quick reply.

I searched the documentation for "translator" and the only think I could
find suggested that I attempt to use "Add or Remove Programs" from the
Control Panel to install optional components.

I clicked on "Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003", then on
"change", then selected "Add or Remove Features.

After that I did 2 things:

1. Clicked on Choose advanced customization of applications; expanded
"Microsoft Office Outlook; Expanded "Importers and Exporters". Under that,
there is only "Import from Other Formats", so I expanded that, clicked on
"Text (DOS)" selected "Run All from my Computer", clicked "Update" button at
the bottom of the screen. It went through an installation process and
"updated successfully".

This had no effect, however, so I

2. Repeated most of the above, but instead of choosing advanced
customization, I "updated" the entire office suite. This happened rather
quickly, but it terminated without any error message.

This also had no effect.

So, I tried exporting my Contacts folder to a separate .pst file, called
"Contacts.pst". (I can do this because I CAN see all the folders when I try
to export to a .pst file.) I then opened that file (and indeed it contained a
copy of all my contacts).

Now when I attempted to export to a Comma file (DOS), ONLY the new
"Contacts" folder in my (new) "Contacts" file appeared in the selection box.
(I.e. the folders in my main file - "Home Office - Personal Folders", still
did not appear.) So I tried to export from that folder, and an Import and
Export Progress pop-up box appeared, followed by a second box with the title:
"Translation Error". which says:

An error occurred while importing or exporting and the import/export was
terminated. MAPI error 0X80040201 was reported. Please try to import/exprt
again later.

There is only an "OK" button.

Now things get weird. When I click OK, then attempt to export again, no
folders (not even the new "Contacts" folder) appears in the export folder
box.

Any ideas?? Where can I get the export translator, if, in fact, I haven't
installed it?

Thanks,

Jerry

More information:

As a test, I created a small "test.csv" text file to see if I could import it.
When I attempted to import it, I was prompted to "select destination
folder:" as with my attempt to export, and again the select box is empty.

Can't repro your findings. I suspect you may have a corrupt profile. Create

You were exactly correct. I created a new profile, and that took care of the
problem.

THANKS!
