No In-Document Mouse Imput Accepted

I am running Microsoft Vista Enterprise with Service Pack 2 and Office 2007.

When I enter Microsoft Word, I get a dialog box stating "An Unknown Error
Occurred". If I opened a specific document, the document will not display
and it will bring up a new document instead (although this works if Word is
already open, and opening a document through the menus within Word works).

Once I am in a document, mouse input is only accepted in some locations.
Clicking in the text to move the cursor does nothing. Attempting to move the
scroll bar by either clicking the arrows or grabbing & dragging the bar does
nothing. Right-clicking on text does not bring up any menu, including
spelling or grammar checking or other features. I can open and close the
ruler, but am unable to move the tabs to adjust text locations.

When I close Word, a box pops up stating "Microsoft Word has stopped
working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem..." with a
continuously scrolling facsimile of a progress bar, and the only button is
"cancel". When this box closes, one of two others will open. The first and
most common is one stating "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working. A
problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the
program and notify you if a solution is available." The buttons available
are "Debug" and "Close Program". If I choose to debug, the only option to
debug with is Microsoft Visual Studio 2008, but the program does not appear
to do anything. Another one has started appearing recently, stating that
Microsoft Word is attempting to Restart, and then the program opens again
unless I cancel (even though I'm trying to CLOSE Word, not restart it).

That's a symptom of a Word Data Key corruption - usually because Word has
been running when updates are installed.

Run Regedit and expand by double-clicking to the key below. With DATA
selected, press DELETE. Word will automatically recreate a new key when it
is restarted.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Symptoms of Data Key corruption include:

• The mouse does not work when you use Word.
• You cannot open a Word document from the Search window in Windows
Vista.
• You cannot open a Word document from Windows Desktop Search.
• Word crashes when you try to start or exit Word.
• Word crashes when you open the Open dialog box.
• Word crashes when you save a document.
• Word crashes when you close a document.

If you feel uncomfortable editing the registry yourself, Microsoft have a
fix that will do this for you.
