No mail proxy tunnel support with Entourage 2004

In Entourage X, I could manually enter a tunnel proxy server for mail
protocol using Entourage preferences. Since Entourage 2004 now gets
its proxy settings from the Mac OS, there is no equivelant setting in
the Network control panel under proxies. There is no mail proxy
listed. I tried using SOCKS proxy, but it doesn't tunnel.

There seems to be some functionality that was left behind when the
decision was made to use the OS proxy settings. There is no longer a
way to specify a mail tunnel proxy. Several other people have posted
with the same problem, but all the responses just say to 'Set the
proxy in the network prefs'. That is not good enough....there is no
mail proxy setting in there. What are we supposed to use???

I have a related problem in that Apple's version of the Socks Proxy client
in the proxies pane of the Network control panel will not work with our
company's Microsoft Proxy server whilst the internal Socks Proxy client in
Entourage X works perfectly with it.

Clearly Apple's Socks Proxy client is not as compatible with Microsoft Proxy
Servers as Entourage X's is (little surprise there).

Either Microsoft need to add this functionality back into Entourage 2004 or
Apple needs to beef up their Socks and Tunnel proxy clients.

Kim.
