No more cut and past for hyperlinks?

I just read a thread that was addressing my exact problem, but it was not answered. In Office 2004, I could copy (via the keyboard) a link from a website, not the whole www.com link, but just a link that says Lab, (say I am linking to info about a dog breed), and then paste (via keyboard) into an excel cell and it would be show up as a hyperlink that only says "lab" so that every time I clicked on this cell it would link back to the internet site. Now, it just won't do it. Even when I open my old file in excel 2008 and cut and paste within that sheet, it doesn't work anymore. I also noticed that the whole paste special "paste as formula, number only, formula only....." is not here anymore. Now, it just says for paste special "unicode text or text". The paste as a hyperlink is grayed out, but I never even had to use that before. what happened to this option? I am going to have to go back to 2004 if this can not be resolved.

Could you explain exactly what steps you're taking?

For me, XL08 acts exactly the same as XL04 with respect to pasting links.

Sure. So, I work on a site called Pubmed. FOr a specific gene, it will say something like "NM_33456", which is in itself a link to the whole page that describes the gene in detail. I have a list of genes in excel, and I used to cut and paste this link in my spreadsheet. Later, I could just click on the "NM_33456" and it would go back to Pubmed and give me all the gene info. Now, I cmmdC and cmmdV into a cell in excel and the link is dead. The page is not protected and even if I save it first, there is no link. Does this explain my problem better?

Afraid I've got no other ideas. Every link I've tried to copy behaves
exactly the same in XL04 and XL08 (either the text with no link, or the
URI without the text). I don't remember seeing the behavior you say XL04
did, but I also don't paste URIs very often.

Of course, in determining what to paste, both XL04 and XL08 depend on
whatever your browser puts on the clipboard. Have you changed browsers
or browser versions?

Yeah - if it ever worked (and I see no reason to disbelieve you, I just
never experienced it), I have to believe that it worked because of the
info that the browser put on the Clipboard, not what XL then does with
it.
