No MVPs here?

Are there no MVPs on this NG to help users with problems? Weren't these
newsgroups one way for Microsoft to provide tech support?

I wrote a post on 9/16 about a serious problem with the demo version of
OneNote, that it installed in a language I do not understand (a Scandinavian
language, although I downloaded it from the Microsoft USA web site), and
there have been zero responses to my post.

No one here who can help with that?

There are MVPs here, along with OneNote team members. I don't recall seeing
your post, but would suggest you uninstall the incorrect language version
and then make sure you're on the correct link to download the version in the
language to match your operating system. Remember, MVPs are users just like
you but volunteer their expertise to help fellow users.

OK, thanks for your reply.

You could find that other post of mine, dated 9/16. Or, I could post the
text of it at the bottom of this message.

I did uninstall the incorrect version. (So, is there a separate version for
each language? Or, is there one demo file that contains all languages, and I
have to change something to enable it for English?)

How would I "make sure I'm on the correct link" for the language? The page I
was on was in English, I got there from Microsoft USA, there was not the
slightest indication anywhere that I was downloading the demo in Danish (or
Swedish, Norwegian, or Finnish, whichever it was) rather than English.

Rather than repeat what I said before, I'll paste the text of the previous
message at the end of this message, after the quote of your post:

-------earlier post pasted below---

I am using Microsoft Office 2003 Professional, with Windows XP Pro. I live
in the USA. The default language on my Office products is English.

I was trying to download the demo version of OneNote for a few days, with no
luck. Finally I succeeded a couple nights ago. All the information on the
web page was in English, I assumed I was downloading the English version.
(The actual URL for the download was:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/f/8/bf8647ac-0ade-49e4-9cf4-e57f980554d1/OneNote.exe )

Having only a dial-up connection, it took hours, so I started the download
before going to bed. I also downloaded the update to SP-1.

This morning I installed the OneNote demo. How surprised I was, to see the
first dialog screen entirely in a Scandinavian language. (I don't know
which.) I cancelled, tried again, still the dialog in the other language. I
re-checked my language settings, in "Microsoft Office 2003 Language
Settings", in "Microsoft Office Tools" program group. English is listed as
the default language, and the "enabled language" list also includes German
and Spanish (both of which I am familiar with), but no Scandinavian
languages are even enabled. Yet, every time I start this OneNote demo
installation it starts in Danish. (As I said, I really don't know which
Scandinavian language it is. For the purpose of discussion now though,
rather than say that every time, I will call the other language Danish in
this post, although I don't really know whether it's Danish, Swedish,
Norwegian, Finnish, etc.)

I decided to proceed with the installation, and see if at a later time in
the installation, or after the product was installed, whether I could change
it to English. Although I don't know "Danish", from the location of the
buttons to click, which were highlighted, and similarity of some of the
words to languages I know, I was able to proceed with the installation,
although I did not understand all of the options.

I installed it completely. I tried to then install the update to SP1, but
that would not install, saying something like "program not found". I assume
it was probably looking for the English version.

I started OneNote anyhow, without the SP1. Again, all info, all menus, help
file, tutorial, etc., were in "Danish". I could not understand enough to use
the program at all. I hoped to find some language option in the menus to
change the language to English, but I could not find any such menu command.

Finally I gave up, uninstalled the program, and did a System Restore, as I
had set a SR point right before the installation.

What happened here? Why, on downloading the demo from Microsoft-USA, from
pages all in English, with my Office settings having English as the default
language, did I end up with a demo in "Danish"? I would think that quite
likely they do not create a separate demo for each language, that they are
all contained, and one can choose the language. But still then, why did it
operate on my system with "Danish" set as the default, with no apparent way
to change that?

Any suggestions? If all languages are contained within one demo, could
someone please tell me how to set English as the default language for that
demo? Something in the registry?

If this "Danish" demo does not contain English in it, I guess I will have to
re-download the demo if I wish to try it, which is a long job with my
dial-up connection. And how would I make sure that I am getting the English
version this time? The other time I saw no choice of languages for the demo.
All the language on the web page was in English. The filename is in English.
There was absolutely no indication that I was downloading a "Danish"
version. How could I make sure that I get an English version, if I have to
re-download?

Anyone else experienced this?

(So, is there a separate version for
each language? Or, is there one demo file that contains all languages, and I

I just (after writing the above) looked again at the page about downloading
the trial version at:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/onenote/prodinfo/trial

There is a paragraph there that indicates that there is a separate trial
version for each language. I'll quote it. Please look at my comments below
the quote:

<< Register for and download the free OneNote 2003 Trial to evaluate the
software in one of the 10 available languages. This download is available in
Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), English, French, German,
Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish.>>

Interesting, the "ten available languages" doesn't even include any
Scandinavian languages. However, I can say with certainty that the version I
ended up with is in a Scandinavian language, although I don't know which.
Definitely not in any of the listed languages. So the info on that page is
incorrect.

PS-

Although I uninstalled that version of OneNote in the Scandinavian language,
in looking at my "My Documents" folder right now, I see that it left a
remnant, a folder called:

\Min anteckningsbok

There are subfolders called: "Klasser", "Personligt", and "Projekt".

Files in the folder have names such as:

"Forskning.one" and "Möten.one", "Övrigt.one", and others.

------

I just put that here, before I delete the folder, in case any reader can
identify what language that is, so in any further discussion, rather than
saying "a Scandinavian language", I can correctly use the language name.
Also to show that it is definitely not in one of the ten listed languages on
the download page.

Hi,

I offered one possible explanation for your problem about half an hour
ago, as I was working through the posts for the last couple of days.

By the way, MVPs are volunteers from the community not Microsoft
employees. So, while we typically pick up posts pretty quickly we can
find that real life commitments mean that we don't check the
newsgroups as often as might be ideal.

Also sometimes (not often) posts "disappear" for no obvious reason.

As implied in my reply to your original post I would be interested to
know if you were using a wheel mouse and Internet Explorer.

I just saw your response on the other thread, Andrew. Thank you for the

I replied to it in that thread.

FWIW,

anteckningsbok entered in Google brings up many links. The first
several are in Sweden, so Swedish looks likely, although I don't know
if the word is used in more than one of the Scandinavian languages.

Also on https://microsoft.order-4.com/onenotedl/welcome.asp?id=misc
all four Scandinavian languages are offered as language choices in the
19 choices I see on that page.

I would guess that in this order, is the version that you somehow ended up
with:
Swedish
Danish
Norwegian

As all of the words you listed are common in all 3 languages except I think
that Personligt & Möten aims the guess at Swedish as I don't recall ever
seeing that in Norwegian.

But it's downloading now, so I am curious as to what you really received !
