How are you opening the file? If you start Excel, you will get a blank
sheet. If you switch to Excel from another app, and there was no file open,
Excel will make a bank workbook. There is no changing this behavior. If
Excel is not open, and you double click a file, then only that file will
open. If a blank workbook also open, then check Excel's preferences to make
sure that the Open files at start up in the general preferences tab is
blank.

Bob may have been referring to the "Alternate startup file location." It's
empty in your General Preferences screenshot, so that's not causing your
blank file.

Thanks Bob,
I don't see that in my general preference:

I believe we've gone through this [at least] once before :) If Excel is
open with no worksheet displayed & you switch back to it by clicking the
Dock icon it will cause Excel to generate a new workbook file. This is
standard OS X behavior for an application with Excel's classification. I
believe that may be what's happening to you. If you use the Command+Tab
method of returning to Excel you will avoid the regeneration of a new
workbook.

Actually Bob, I don't get a new workbook by clicking the dock icon.
I get a new workbook when I click a closed excel file. So then I have the open excel file I just double clicked as well as a new workbook I have no need for.

A macro might be responsible. Did you check? Open the editor with Alt-F11,
then double click on all elements in the Projects window to reveal their
code. Look for a suspicious Workbooks.Open or Workbooks.Add somewhere.

Then maybe it needs to be explored in a bit more depth...

JL has already offered a suggestion but you'll need to provide more *exact*
information if that isn't it. Is this correct:

Excel is *not* running
You double-click an Excel file icon in a Finder window
Excel launches
The file you double-clicked opens
A new blank workbook window opens as well

If this is not accurate please provide the specific detailed step-by-step
description of what the circumstances are.

Bob, what you described is excatly what happens:

Excel is *not* running
You double-click an Excel file icon in a Finder window
Excel launches
The file you double-clicked opens
A new blank workbook window opens as well

Then the first thing I'd suspect is that you have a folder somewhere which
contains a blank workbook file & you have that folder designated as the
Alternate Startup File Location in Excel> Preferences - General.

In the App folder, in Office, Startup, there are two files in there: workbook and workbook.xls
Are those what you are talking about?
I think one is for when exel open from closed. and one is when you do a command N.
But I just want to get rid of the blank workbook from opening when I click on an exisiting file

Kevs,
You probably put these files there a while ago as a result of some prior
request of yours to create a default workbook template configured a certain
way. If you delete these files, you will probably solve your blank worksheet
problem, but undoubtedly will revert to some other prior condition that you
created these templates for.

Bob, very astute of you as usual. of course they were created with help of you guys in past.
But I just removed the one ending in .xls and the problem is solved and everything else look great!
