no "new mail" sound

I just installed Office Mac 2008. I no longer get a sound indicating that new mail has arrived in my inbox. I went into "preferences" in Entourage and it looks like sound set is "default" and all of the boxes are checked, which should mean sound appears. But this isn't the case. Help!
