No Office 2004 applications will run

So far I have not had any luck solving this problem and Microsoft
wasn't sure of a fix.

If I log in under any pre-existing account (other than root), no
Office applications will run. When I try to start Entourage or
PowerPoint I get the following error message:

Application Launch Failure
The application "Entourage" could not be launched because of a shared
library error: "<Microsoft Entourage><><><>"

Word and Excel start but when I try to work on a document the
application quits and that error comes up.

I have run the Remove Office program off of the CD (which will run)
and have removed Office 2004 and then dragged the Office 2004 folder
from the CD back into my applications folder. If I try to run the
Setup Assistant, the Microsoft Error Report Program launches and
reports this:

Error Signature:
Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS
Date/Time: 2004-07-10 19:42:56 -0400
Application Name: Office Setup Assistant
Application Version: 11.0.0.040322
Module Name: CarbonCore
Module Version: unknown
Module Offset: 0x0002ef8c
Extra app info: Reg=English Loc=0x0409

I also have tried running the Database Utility program and if I try to
Verify or Rebuild the database I instantly receive the following
error.

An error occurred while attempting to rebuild your database.
An unknown error (-5000) occurred

Again this problem doesn't happen when I am logged in as the root
user, so I believe it must have something to do with a corrupted file
in the user directory. I have looked around and people have suggested
it is a permissions problem or a corrupted font issue. I have tried
repairing permissions (there were none to repair) and disabling all
the fonts and neither of these steps solved my problem. I am near my
wits end on this one and really need to be able to check email.
Any help that anyone could provide would be VERY appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Parker,

When you first installed Office were you logged in as Root or as an
administrator (regular OSX default user).

Have you tried running Disk Utility after booting form from the Mac OS
X installation CD?

Jim,
When I originally installed Office 2004 and on subsequent attempts I
have been logged in as an administrator, not as Root.

David,
I have booted from the 10.3 install CD and tried running the Disk
Utility to Repair Drive. That didn't work, as it found nothing wrong.

Good!!! There is hardly ever a good reason to use the root session
(believe me: way too dangerous).

Did you previously have Office X onthis Mac ?? I would suggest
uninstalling Office 2004 and X properly (with the uninstaller),
repairing the permissions through DiskUtility and rebooting. Then
reinstall Office 2004 and try again.

It looks to me like there are some remainings of a previous install that
interfere with Office 2004.

Hi there,

i have got quite a similar problem. However, I do not even get an error
message.

I installed the Office 2004 Test Drive (30 days trial) on Panther as
administrator in the applications folder (all in german, by the way).

Then I started Word, some installation routines did run, fonts were
installed. Then it ran and i could use the application. Well, I felt like a
was in Toyland. This really looks like it was designed for kiddies, doesn't
it?

Now I logged off and back on as a "normal" user. I started Word, the same
additional installation routines were run, fonts were installed (I wonder
why these fonts were installed again). And then, word stopped. Without any
alert. It just wasn't there any more.

What's this?

By the way: I have the same problem with other applications, for example
Mozilla Thunderbird. Program starts up and disappears before anything would
show.

Sorry for my English, but I am German ...

Thank you
Martin
