No Office Application will open!!!!!

I woke up this morning and tried to open Word, but the icon bounced a
few times and then rested without opening anything.

I then tried opening word files (.docs) and the same thing happened.

I then tried opening excel and powerpoint but the same thing happened.

A Norton Antivirus test of the Microsoft Office folder yielded
nothing, and I'm scanning my whole hard drive now but no other apps
else have been affected.

I borrowed a friend's cd and tried to reinstall it but I still can't
open anything. The window disappeared before I could put in any of the
product key codes, which might have been problematic anyway because
they are different than the ones I had.

I'm a student just starting a new semester and I need my word
processor to work again, what's wrong and how can I fix this?

Thank you!

Reinstalling is *rarely* the first line of defense, installing from another
user's product keys *never* is. There's also no virus involved. Answer these
questions before anything else should be done:

What happened to *your* installation disk - or did you ever have one? Do you
or did you have the Office 2004 Test Drive installed? Was it removed using
the Remove Office utility before installing the retail copy of Office? Have
you perhaps just been using the Test Drive (free trial version) that came on
your Mac and has now expired? We need the [real] facts & details to help:)

Is OS X fully updated? To what level?

Is Office fully updated? To what level?

While waiting for a response once you provide that info, you might try
running Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions just to see if that _might_
help... It can't hurt.

I have a Mac OSX V. 10.4.9 which is going to be fully updated soon
when the "iTunes" and "Mac OS X (Intel)" update completes.
Office should be updated...I just downloaded the new Word update
yesterday but that was after the problem started and the update didn't
fix anything.
I had an installation disk, but I installed word a couple years ago
and have not had a problem since so I didn't think to bring it back to
school with me. I had installed Microsoft Office on my last computer
which had all the files transferred to my current one when it crashed.
I'm assuming word and everything else got transferred as well, but
there may be a chance that it didn't. I did get the files transferred
to the new computer about 13 months ago so if that's in the vicinity
of a typical trial version than that may have something to do with it.
Both folders say "Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive"; one of them
includes "...(from Old Mac)." so it seems probable that the Apple
people forgot to transfer the important version of Office, but be that
as it may I won't be home (to get the installation disc) for a couple
months.

I'm sorry I left out the info about the trial versions yesterday, I
was freaking out and must not have been thinking straight. I don't
mean to make your job harder...I guess I ended up assuming that since
I had already installed the applications, they were there for good. I
needneedneed word probably more than my toothbrush so waiting until
thanksgiving to retrieve my cd is not very practical as a student, nor
is buying a new office. And I have my housemate's installation
disc....so what should I do now?

I'm also sorry if I forgot any helpful information, I'm not the most
tech savvy guy in the world.
I really appreciate your help!!

OK - that gives a clearer picture of the situation:)

The very first thing you'll need to do is borrow your housemate's disk, but
it will need to be a Full Version, not an *upgrade* - if it's from an
upgrade package you'll also need full version install disk to complete the
installation. Although using one of his/her keys is technically a EULA
violation you can be the judge there... or better - if possible - have
someone from home locate the key for your copy. In general the procedure
will go as follows, but review the web page via the link below;

Rename or move the Microsoft User Data folder.

Next the installation disk has a Remove Office utility program which you'll
need to run in order to remove all traces of any versions of Office
currently installed. Run the utility more than once to be sure it gets
everything.

Once you reinstall Office apply the 11.3.5, 11.3.6 & 11.3.7 updates in that
sequence.

You should then be in good shape. Complete details can be found here for
step-by-step instruction:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/RemoveReinstall.html

If you have any further problems or questions don't hesitate to post them
here.

BTW, this _ain't_ my job:) All who contribute here do so voluntarily, so
you may very well get some additional input from others picking up on the
thread.
