No Office Source Engine Service on my machine

I can't get Office updates to work, and everything points to the Office
Source Engine and how the service must be started. I don't have the service
listed at all. Is there any way to reinstall the service itself without
reinstalling Office? I've been digging for this all morning and haven't found
a way to do it.

I don't know if this got lost when I moved into my new notebook a few months
back or what, but it's gotten really annoying being unable to get these
updates, and also being unable to *not* get these updates (Microsoft insists
that I continue trying to install them, even though it always fails). You
would think that they could report a useful error, or check the errant
condition (i.e., the service isn't running) before even attempting the
installation.

I've updated the ose.exe file, but I have not discovered how to start it as
a service.

You may want to try repairing Office.
Using Start=>Programs=>Admin Tools=>Services Office Source Engine should be listed, possibly with Manual start.

You can use the MS Update service for Office 2003 rather than Officeupdate and be able to 'do not show me again' on updates.

Again, the Office Source Engine is not showing up on my list of services at
all. That appears to be the base issue. I'm looking for a way to reinstall
the service itself and not the whole Office suite.

I had already tried that, but it just complains that I have hidden critical
updates.
