"No Printer" eventhough there is...

Suddenly Word refuses to see my printer. It saw it yesterday. It
printed from it yesterday.

Every other app on my computer sees it and can print to it.

But now Word says "No Printer Selected." I go to "Edit Printer List"
and there it is.

Hi Ken,

You mean your printer is not listed as an option in the Page Setup dialog?
If that's the case, then no wonder Word can't see it. Now, what to do about
it. Are you in OS X/Word X? Probably, but I'm not. I seem to remember
previous advice about needing to recreate your printer though. Try that.

Sorry, that's the best I can do (and please always list your OS and Office
versions when posting).

OSX Panther
Word X

When I select "Print" in Word X - the Printer dropdown says "No Printer Selected."
When I attempt to select "Edit Printer List," it's already there.

As I mentioned, every other app sees it there and can print fine.

Hi Ken,

Sorry, but I've exhausted my (paltry) knowledge of printing issues,
especially where OS X is concerned (I'm in OS 9). Anyone else following
this thread that can help?

Well, this one is a first fo me, but I just want to make sure about a
few things:

Is MacOS X 10.3 up to date ?? (10.3.2)
Is Office up to date (should be 10.1.5)
Did you try repairong permissions on the boot drive and restarting
afterwards ?? (through DiskUtility)

Yep.

Yes, just applied updates 10.1.2, 10.1.3, 10.1.4 and 10.1.5
Did you try repairong permissions on the boot drive and restarting
afterwards ?? (through DiskUtility)

Yep. After each patch in fact.

Same problem.

:'-(((
Then I don't have a clear explanation for that at all :-(
I've never seen it myself so it's a little hard to trouble shoot.
I was first thinking about suggesting to use some of the applications
that repair the print center, but they only play around with temp files,
and it shouldn't affect the print pane in the app.

Have you tried creating a virtual printer to see if it could appear in
Word ?? Create a printer supposed to print through IP on 127.0.0.1 (the
trick address that points to your own mac).

I used the Uninstall off the Office CD, removed just about everything I could find,
repaired permissions, reinstalled, applied all patches, repaired permissions again
and... Same problem: "No Printer."

Everything else still works fine.

I do not know how to create a virtual printer and quite frankly I'm at wit's end.
Between this and Word crashing 1-2 times per session, I think I'm finally done
with MSOX.

Thank you all for your help.

Ken, try this. It won't hurt anything, but it might help.

Launch the Printer Setup Utility and remove the printer. Quit the Printer
Setup Utility, then relaunch it and add the printer.

Is this a problem with just Word, or all of the Office applications? If it's
just word, then try trashing the com.microsoft.word.plist file in the
~/library/Preferences folder, and the Word Settings (10) file in the
Preferences/Microsoft folder.

Hope this helps.

I really don;t think it's a Word issue. I keep on thinking there is
something fishy on your system.

Well, if you are still willing to give it a try, a virtual printer is
pretty easy to create.
Go to the Print center to add a new printer, select IP printing and use
127.0.0.1 as the address. A new printer will be created for this
service.
It won't do you much good, but at least you shoudl be able to see if it
appears in Word,
