When in either of the office applications and I attempt to open files,
nothing happens and it acts like a hang up. if I wait a moment or two and
reclick on the file it will show a "not responding" alert with an hour glass.
then I wait some more and it finally opens.
this issue remains the deeper into files I go until I can finally open up
the file I want.

this problem seemed to occur at about the same time that I loaded a Sony
digital camera software package that had 'Nero" software imbedded in it that
got downloaded into my computer.
Any Ideas

Often these kinds of hangups on more than one Office application are caused
by add-ins. It's possible the digital camera software itself or the Nero
software installed an Office-wide add-in that's creating the issue. Adobe
Acrobat is another that's known for causing hangs on startup. Printer
drivers are also known to cause this kind of issue.

Which version of Office are you using, and do you get any error messages
when the apps hang (other than just an hourglass)?

Once the app opens, try running Office Diagnostics (2007) or Detect and
Repair (2003). Then look for add-ins. (I don't know which version of Office
you're using, so I can't tell you where to look....)
