For some mysterious the "Save As" options seem to have disappeared in my
Word 2000 installation, i.e. all I see under "Save as type:" is All
Files (*.*)

Any idea how to restore the proper functionality?

I'm afraid this problem still persists...

In case I didn't describe it clearly enough first time round, here is
another attempt.

The situation is that I haven't lost the "Save As" option/button, i.e.
it is there alright in the File menu, but in the Save As window that
comes up when I click the button all I see under "Save as type:" is the
option All Files (*.*), i.e. I don't see the usual menu offering txt,
rtf, html different versions of doc etc.

Any idea how to rectify this problem?

Perhaps I need to repair my Word installation?

Thank you.

What happens if you start in safe mode and use SaveAs? From Start, Run, type
in

winword /a

and press enter. Now try SaveAs.

Look at what I just found: It works fine:

The Save As choice is under the Office Button on the top left (thats the one
that looks like the corporate logo with no words on it letting you know its a
button) (the Alt, F, A keyboard shortcut from prior versions still works in
Word 2007).
The Help is located under the blue question mark icon above the ribbon on
the right (F1 still works)

Please note that the original question was about Word 2000, not Word 2007.

Thanks, but the problem persists =-O

Perhaps I should have mentioned that the problem is unlikely to be
related to normal.dot, because I use the same normal.dot on two
different machines, and Save As works normally on the two machines.

In case it is relevant, the other two machines run XP whereas the
machine with the Save As problem runs Windows 2000.

Incidentally, Save As works OK in the other Office 2000 applications,
and it also works OK in OpenOffice.

Very odd...

Any other ideas?

Is this something that has suddenly occurred: that is, did it work
previously and has anything be done to the computer at around the time it
started happening?

Can you actually save and what format does it save in?

Hi Terry

Yes, it occurred suddenly some time ago (yes, it did work before), but
unfortunately I really can't remember what I did to the computer at the
time that might have caused it...

Word saves alright in the format of the file that is currently open, and
it saves new documents as .doc

It really isn't a big issue, actually, because I rarely have to save
files in a different format, although today I had a docx file (which I
can open alright via the compatibility pack) that I wanted to save as
doc but was unable to do so - fortunately OpenOffice 3 came to the
rescue :)

Any other ideas/suggestions? If not, I guess I'll just have to live with
it (although I tend to be quite determined in trying to get to the
bottom of such mysteries :) )

Hi Herbert,

Is this with any document, or only certain ones?

If you use Tools=>Customize=>Commands
and from the 'Tools' choice drag the 'COM Add-ins'
choice to a menu, then use it, are there any COM Add-ins
listed as active and does removing them make a difference?

You mentioned considering running a repair before, was that done?

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, as far as I am aware it happens with any document.

Yes, COM Add-Ins lists two Add-ins, i.e. Web Page Wizard (which points
to an MS Office file called WEBPAGE.DLL), which is not activated, and
Babylon Translator Addin (which relates to my Babylon software (see
<http://www.babylon.com/>), although I had no idea the software had
added this add-in to Word!) and is activated.

Deactivating the Babylon add-in doesn't make any difference to the Save
As behaviour - should I try removing it rather than just deactivating it?

Re. repair - no, I haven't done this yet.

Sorry about the delay in coming back to this.

Repair didn't help, but I just discovered that the problem was related
to my File-Ex software (see <http://www.cottonwoodsw.com/fx3summ.html>).

I have been using this software for years and it is excellent, but it
would appear that I had 'messed up' my settings for MS Word on this
computer.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help, and sorry I was 'barking up the
wrong tree' :-[
