No screen display of text box infill and line colours

When using Word 2003 and creating a text box I am unable to fill it with
colour and the boder lines remain black. I can enter coloured text without
problem. The text box prints correctly with the coloured infill and lines
selected. How do I get these colours to appear on the screen display ?

In Windows Control Panel | Accessibility Options | Display, make sure "Use
High Contrast" is not checked.
