No smart (dynamic) address groups?

I'm a little shocked that Entourage 2008 does not appear to have done
anything to make group emailing easier. It seems like a simple feature, and
I've assumed that the major upgrade's impending status was the only reason
it hadn't been added to 2004.

PLEASE add dynamic address lists. They would work in a manner similar to
iTune's Smart Playlists or iPhoto¹s Smart Albums.

To send an email to a specific list of people from a category or categories
today:

1. Open the Contacts window.
2. Choose ³Category is² from the filter popup.
3. Wait for the filter to take. (>7 seconds on my 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/4
GB RAM MacBook Pro.)
4. Drag all contacts to the Address or CC: field in an open email.
5. Click the email window.
6. Drag all contacts from the Address or CC: field to the BCC: field to
preserve member¹s privacy (since the BCC window doesn¹t appear in
non-selected email windows, at least in Entourage 2004))

What it should be:

1. One-time process: Create new dynamic address list based on Category,
Project, or other metadata associated with the contact.*
2. When mailing, just add the dynamic address list to the BCC: field. All
contacts that meet the right criteria are added to the email.

I was under the impression that pretty much any modern application that is
used to manage large numbers of anything (like contacts) would include smart
lists like Apple has put into the iLife suite. What¹s up?

Allen

*Ideally, the smart filters for address groups would include not only the
obvious ones like Category and Project, but also boolean operations and
criteria based on any address item field, such as name, company name, email
address domain, and other metadata such as date added to contacts, date
added to dynamic group, etc. But even the simplest would provide 90% of the
value and get us out of the hassle we currently have to go through to mail
to changing lists of subscribers!

Suggest it to Microsoft. I've never heard of this before. Although it sounds
like a good idea, it's not the given that you imply it should be.

In the meantime, you can use a Custom View. It does everything you ask, but
it can't be selected when addressing a message. You can, however, choose the
View, highlight all the contacts, and click the "EMail" button to address.

{Allen}:

Thanks, that does cut the effort a little.

How does one suggest something to Microsoft, outside of posting it here?

Cheers,

Allen

Choose "Send Feedback About Entourage" from the Help menu. Don't count on
Microsoft seeing anything posted here.
