no sound

The college where I teach gave me a copy of Office XP to
download at home for my computer class. I removed Office
2000 and downloaded the XP and it would not work. I took
the XP off and put the 2000 back in and now I have no
sound. I have checked everything I can think of, re-
installed soundcard, updated drivers...etc....any
suggestions?
