I have access to spell/grammar check. If appears in preferreces but is
grayed out, not on drop-down menu at all. I can run spell/grammar check out
of the CD.

I'm thinking nobody has any specific answers to this, so here's some general
troubleshooting info.

Are you using Office 2001 or 98? What updates have you applied?

Have you tried renaming the Normal template (in Apps: Office: Templates) and
the Word Settings file (in System Folder: Preferences: (maybe in Microsoft
folder)? Close Word, rename them both, then reopen. Word will have created
new ones. These two files hold a lot of settings and can become corrupted.

This link is about missing menus (not your problem) but has specific
directions for testing the Normal template and the Settings file, and for
restoring your customizations if it turns out one of those is corrupt.

Hi Ray:

The first thing to check is that the Operating System, Word, the Document,
the Style and the text the cursor is in are all set to the SAME language.

"English" is not good enough: it must be "English US" or "English AUS" or
whatever.

You must also check that you do not have document protected in the place
where the insertion point is.

These two are the usual causes: Spelling and grammar can't operate if you
have English US installed and the document is in English UK, or if the
document is protected for forms.

Hope this helps
