Non-appearance of text while actually typing in a cell

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

Don't know what I've done, but cannot see the text while typing in a cell, until I move to another cell. The curser has also disappeared. Have verified my settings and re-started computer. I hope it's so simple it's plum evaded me!

Have a look at Excel> Preferences - Edit, restore the first check
[Double-click allows editing directly in cell].
