non-destructive system restore

I recently had to perform a non-destructive system
restore which surprisingly unloaded MS Office
completely. After re-installing I am unable to find the
address book I was maintaining for my contact
information. The instructions for the system restore
assured me that no data files would be removed or erased
in the process. How and where can I find the file
containing my list of contacts?

Search for a file with the .pst extension on it. It holds all of your
Outlook data.

I don't actually use the contact list I use an address
book I imported from Outlook Express as a .wab which I
understood to now be in a separate file. I tried doing
an import of a wab file I know to be current but from
within the Address book menu the import option is grayed
out.

What version of Outlook are you using? The Windows Address Book (.wab) is
used by Outlook Express and older versions of Outlook in a sharing mode.
All of the contacts are kept in the .pst file. If you used Outlook, you
have a .pst file.

I am using Outlook 2000 which still has a button on the
toolbar for an Address book. Again the import menu
selection from within this Address book is greyed out. I
restored the pst file which I thought contained my old
infomation but there are still know entries in the
address book.

You need to use the Export function from the main Outlook window, not the
address book. Select the option to export to a file and select the personal
folders file. Then select the Contacts folder to export.
