nontechnical help for office suite svc pk2 error

I have tried unsuccessfully to do this install. At first, I received an
"unknown error" message. then I followed instructions on renaming a file,
and installing again from a download from Microsoft site. Tried that, and
now I get message "the detection failed, this can be due to a corrupted
installation database"

I am scared to death to try anything else because I do not want to loose any
of my emails, etc. Would someone please tell me where I can get specific
instructions on what to do? I'd rather not spend MORE money calling
Microsoft.

Do not be scared. All your emails and data files that are saved will not be lost and
they will remain on your computer.

Now tell us how are you trying to update to SP2. Through Windows or Microsoft Update
or did you download the SP2 file manually and trying to install it manually or
through Windows Update
