Can anyone point me to a really good explanation of normal.doc. Mainly I
would like to make formatting changes to normal.doc. For instance, I would
like to change the margins and the font type and size and make that
permanent. Can I simply make those changes on a blank document and then save
that document as normal.doc?

Any explanation would be of great help to me.

You should not save any document as normal.dot, as that will lose a great
deal of information. In fact, you can't save a document directly from Word
as normal.dot, because normal.dot's file is always open when Word is
running, and you can't save over an open file.
