Normal.dot and deletion of ~*normal.dot, recycle bin

D

D Wilson

I couldn't change margins in Word. Was told where to find Normal.dot. I
RIGHT clicked on folder but several others were created anyway. Thought the
problem with Word was fixed but now there is no folder for ~*normal.dot. I
can't find it anywhere and I searched and searched. Also, recycle bin shows
"empty" but I know it's not. It won't let me open it. I am running Windows
Professional 2003 and Microsoft Office Professional 2003. Please help me,
AGAIN!!

D

D Wilson

Also, each time I close a Word doc I get "Closing word will change the global
template. Do you want to do this? I never got that before.

S

StressMonkey

It's okay to delete your normal.dot. It can become corrupted and sometimes
that's the only way to fix Word. The folder it is in on my computer is
c:\documents and settings\user name\application data\microsoft\templates.
Is that folder still there? You can create new folders by right clicking.
What folders were created?

D

D Wilson

Thanks a lot, Monkey. My gosh, my search results turned these up: one said
C:\Documents & settings\Dianna\Application data\Microsoft\templates, one said
c:\Documents and settings\Dianna\application, one said Info: Corrupt
Normal.dot causes errors when automating word http://support
microsoft.com/kb/q247028/#top. There were EIGHT Explorer icons, four said
http://www.microsoft.com/wbs/aspx/smgget.aspx . . . with different sequences
of letters and unmbers. There were four more with basically the same
information and when I tried to open these last eight I was warned not to!
And, I still can't access my recycle bin. What have I done???? Or, what has
Word done????

Beth Melton

Okay, take a deep breath, slow down, and we'll tackle this one piece
at a time. :)

First, ~$Normal.dot is a temporary file, called an owner file, that is
created when a document is opened and is deleted when the file is
closed. It's used to determine if a file is already opened by another
user. IOW, don't worry about these too much at this point.

What do you mean by "I right-clicked the folder be several others were
created anyway"? After right-clicking did you also click a command? If
so, what was it? What was created? Folders? Files? Where were you when
you right-clicked? In the Windows Search Results? The Windows
Explorer?

Start with this and we'll go from there.

I right clicked and a new, empty Word doc opened. I did reset some of the
"format page" portion and it always asked me (paraphrased): This will change
the global template. Do you still want to change it? I unchecked the PROMPT
TO SAVE NORMAL TEMPLATE. Each time a new normal.dot has been made it was
made in "Windows Search Results." There are NOW two files and two folders
named Normal.dot in there. Thanks for helping, Beth.

We're having a couple of separate threads trying to help the same person, so
let's combine the two...

D

D Wilson

I have the recycle bin issue resolved. Yes, there are two threads going for
me; actually, there are three! I am so sorry. The third one is under "How
can I tell if I have Microsoft Office Professional? I know I have it but the
other issues addressed there haven't been resolved such as information from
one Word doc being automatically put into one I was creating and I was told I
couldn't use Word 1997 in this doc (paraphrased). I reinstalled Office
Professional 2003. I ran McAfee virus scan. I ran Spybot. I defraged. I
deleted cookies and temporary internet files. I used disk clean up. I did
all these things BEFORE Beth's kind suggestions. She thought PERHAPS I had a
virus. I don't know. And, I agree all three threads should be put together.
Again, I apologize. Oh, no one else owned this computer -- I just bought it
from Dell a couple of months ago and I bought Microsoft Office Professional
2003 Edition from Dell. It wasn't preinstalled. I bought it later and
installed it myself. Thank you so much. I so very, very much hope you will
continue to help me.

Where exactly are you right-clicking and are you clicking any other
command??

I thought you might be viewing the Windows Search Results. I suspect
what you are seeing are shortcuts rather than actual files. When you
access a file a shortcut is created and placed in the Recent Documents
folder. Check the location of each of the files you see to determine
if this is the case.

One this is resolved then we'll move on the to the prompt to save
Normal.dot and your page margins issue.

Don't worry about it--I just wanted to make sure that Beth and I aren't
splitting our efforts, in case all your problems are related (such as being
caused by a virus or something).

Yes, you're absolutely right because once, when deleting, I noticed something
about "shortcut." I do right click on the now what I know to be shortcuts.
I opened them and deleted them. Thank you so much for your help. I am,
indeed, anxious to move on for I didn't have one problem with Microsoft
Office XP. I certainly appreciate your patience, expertise, willingness and
help.

B

Beth Melton

Okay, so we've ascertained that what you are seeing in Windows Search
are shortcuts and you don't have a virus or a little gremin wrecking
havoc. :)

Now, regarding the prompt to save your Normal.dot. First, when you
changed your margins did you click the 'Default" button in the Page
Setup dialog box? If you did then will modify the default margins for
each new document you create by making the change in Normal.dot which
is the template, or pattern, used to create a new document when you
click the New command. In this scenario you should have been prompted
to save the changes to Normal.dot because you did indeed make a change
and you should confirm the save.

BUT, if you are prompted to save Normal.dot each time you exit Word,
you may want to turn the "prompt to save Norma" back on to verify
this, and you have not made any modifications, such as using the
Default button in various dialog boxes, add AutoText, create a macro,
etc then it I'd say you have a third-party add-in that changes
Normal.dot each time Word starts. Third-party add-ins are used to
provide additional functionality to Word, such as the Avery Label
wizard, scanning software, etc. You really don't want an add-in making
a change each time you exit Word.

I also suspect the message you encountered along the lines of,
"Microsoft Office 1997 can't support the selected options for this
doc" and the oddities you are encountering are caused by a third-party
add-in rather than the Word application. It's not uncommon to be using
an add-in designed for an earilier version of Word in a later version.
If they (the add-in developers) created the message box then the same
message would be displayed regardless of the version you are using.

Here is an article that specifically addresses the prompt to save
Normal.dot and it contains steps you can use to determine if you have
third-party add-ins installed and if so, which one is causing the
problem:

"Word prompts me to save changes to the Normal.dot template"
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx

Let us know how this works out and then we'll move on to the next
issue - provided this doesn't resolve the other issues. :)

Again, thank you, Beth. I didn't click on "default" when I exited Word so I
turned off the PROMPT TO SAVE NORMAL TEMPLATE option. I got this from
Microsoft Office. But, it also said "or there may be a problem with Word."
Just now, I turned PROMPT TO SAVE NORMAL TEMPLATE back on. I copied and
pasted five pages from the above-referenced article and, when I went to save
it, I got the following dialogue box: It was named, "Some of the features in
this Documeent aren't suported by Microsoft Word 97. - Nested table cells
will be lost. Cell contents will be separated by tabs. - Text color will
become the nearest supported color. - Text wrapping breaks will become
linebreaks." I got a similiar message, as you know, once before. This
dialogue box appeared only after I reinstalled Office as an attempt to "fix"
it. I still don't understand why I'm receiving it. I never did, again, when
using earlier editions (2000, XP) of Office.

I opened then went to close another Word Doc. I got a dialoge box labeled,
SECURITY WARNING. Within the box, "Contains macros by Microsoft
Corporation." I went to "details" and got GENERAL tab. It was named
Microsoft Corp. and Countersigner "VeriSign Time." I navigated through this
box and was asked if I "wanted to INSTALL CERTIFICATE . . ." I did not
intall any certificates.

I clicked "OK" until I got back to SECURITY WARNING. I could, DISABLE
MACROS" or ENABLE MACROS or MORE INFO. I went to "more Info" help from
Microsoft and part of the Security warning info said: "The document might
contain a macro virus. If you don't expect the document to contain a macro,
you might have a virus that is adding a macro virus to the document. Check
your computer for viruses and try to get an uninfected copy of the document
from the source."

"The macro might be in a document you downloaded as an HTML page from a Web
site and opened as a temporary file. If your virus scanner tells you it has
cleaned out a virus in this documnet everyt time you open it, you are
removing the virus from the temporary file only, not from the original
document on the web server. Check your computer for viruses, and notify the
ssource about problems with the original document." Beth, over the last
couple of weeks or so I was copying and pasting large amount of information
from "Webopedia Online Dictionary for Computer and Internet Terms and
Definitions."

I checked, DISABLE MACROS. Probably not the thing to do but I couldn't
close the WARNING window until I did.

I followed the steps to set macro security to MEDIUM. I cleared the TRUST
ALL INSTALLED ADD-INS AND TEMPLATES box. There were no "trusted publishers."

Next, under Tools, options. File locations tab, file types and selected
startup. Clicked Modify. There was no "Folder name." The cursor just sat
there blinking and waiting for my response. I had none since I didn't know
what to do.

Under "How can I determine all the add-ins that Word loads when it starts?"
i did what you said, Toos, Macro, Security, Medium. Trusted Publishers tab,
clear Trust all installed add[ins and templates.

Beth, I've learned a lot but I think I am getting out of my "comfort zone."
I am getting in over my head. I am so worried and frustated with myself I'm
in tears!!

Okay, this is the last issue I confronted: EVERY time I open word I can't
do anything. After several seconds, the SECURITY WARNING window always
appears. I click on the red "close" X. It won't close until I click several
times and each click brings up different smart tags. First, FPlace.DLL, then
FDate DLL, then MOFL.DLL, then then FStock.DLL, the FPerson.Dll,
thenFname.Dll then Mofl.Dll again. Only when I click thse seven times and
get these seven different smart tag names in this sequence, will the window
close. After a few seconds, the cursor appears to allow me to work.

Beth, again, I have no idea what is going on. I honestly can't afford to
bring in an IT professional right now. I might not have installed Office
correctly. I might have "dragged" in a vius. I don't know. Can you
continue to help???

B

Beth Melton

You're not in over your head. All you have to do is follow the
instructions and answer the questions. It's okay if you don't fully
understand everything, unless you want to of course. :)

First, now that we have the full text of the message you encountered
regarding the Word 97 message you previously encountered I believe I
know what that is from. Go to Tools/Options/Save and make sure
"Disable features after Word 97" is not selected. If this is turned on
then you will encounter the "Some features aren't supported" message
since the items the message listed were not available in Word 97. It
doesn't mean those who still use Word 97 won't be able to open the
document, just that it may appear a slightly different on their
computer.

Regarding the prompts to enable macros and such. This is okay too. The
steps in the article, to turn off the "Trust all installed add-ins and
templates" is only a temporary change so we can determine what exactly
loads when Word starts. Other than the SmartTags are there any other
files? All you need to do is provide the file names - don't worry
about checking the certificate or anything else - just jot down the
file name and click "Disable Macros", if that's what you are
comfortable with doing. (The SmartTags can be enabled).

Then all we need is the list of file names to take a look at. We'll
worry about finding the location of your Word Startup folder later if
we need to.

Once we determine what is loading then you can turn the "Trust all
installed add-ins and templates" back on and you won't encounter the
prompts each time you start Word. So don't worry, that's temporary.
:)

I already had disabled features after 97. At least I figured that out!
Still I received the above-mentioned message.

I can't get into word at all until I get past the SECURITY WARNING box which
appears several seconds after I open Word. I have to click several times on
the red "close" button and, each time I do, different files/folders (??)
appear:

C:\progr~1\common~1micros~1smartt~1\FDATE.DLL. The last part changes with
each click (up to then everything remains the same): \MDFL.DLL; \FSTOCK.DLL;
\FPERSON.DLL; \FNAME.DLL; \MDFT.DLL. Only after going through this sequence
can I do anything in word, now.

bring in an IT professional right now. I might not have installed
Office
correctly. I might have "dragged" in a vius. I don't know. Can
you
continue to help???

Okay, so we've ascertained that what you are seeing in Windows
Search
are shortcuts and you don't have a virus or a little gremin
wrecking
havoc. :)

Now, regarding the prompt to save your Normal.dot. First, when you
changed your margins did you click the 'Default" button in the Page
Setup dialog box? If you did then will modify the default margins
for
each new document you create by making the change in Normal.dot
which
is the template, or pattern, used to create a new document when you
click the New command. In this scenario you should have been
prompted
to save the changes to Normal.dot because you did indeed make a
change
and you should confirm the save.

BUT, if you are prompted to save Normal.dot each time you exit
Word,
you may want to turn the "prompt to save Norma" back on to verify
this, and you have not made any modifications, such as using the
Default button in various dialog boxes, add AutoText, create a
macro,
etc then it I'd say you have a third-party add-in that changes
Normal.dot each time Word starts. Third-party add-ins are used to
provide additional functionality to Word, such as the Avery Label
wizard, scanning software, etc. You really don't want an add-in
making
a change each time you exit Word.

I also suspect the message you encountered along the lines of,
"Microsoft Office 1997 can't support the selected options for this
doc" and the oddities you are encountering are caused by a
third-party
add-in rather than the Word application. It's not uncommon to be
using
an add-in designed for an earilier version of Word in a later
version.
If they (the add-in developers) created the message box then the
same
message would be displayed regardless of the version you are using.

Here is an article that specifically addresses the prompt to save
Normal.dot and it contains steps you can use to determine if you
have
third-party add-ins installed and if so, which one is causing the
problem:

"Word prompts me to save changes to the Normal.dot template"

Let us know how this works out and then we'll move on to the next
issue - provided this doesn't resolve the other issues. :)

Yes, you're absolutely right because once, when deleting, I
noticed
something
about "shortcut." I do right click on the now what I know to be
shortcuts.
I opened them and deleted them. Thank you so much for your help.
I
am,
indeed, anxious to move on for I didn't have one problem with
Microsoft
Office XP. I certainly appreciate your patience, expertise,
willingness and
help.

:

Where exactly are you right-clicking and are you clicking any
other
command??

I thought you might be viewing the Windows Search Results. I
suspect
what you are seeing are shortcuts rather than actual files.

I didn't see this message posted: Whenever I try to open Word I get the
SECURITY WARNING after several seconds. I have to click "close macros" for
all the following: C:\progra~1\common~1micros~1smartt~1\fdate.dll -- each
following file/folder (??) is named the same exception after the last forward
slash: \mdfl.dll; \fstock.dll; \fperson.dll; \fname.dll; and \mdfl.dll. Only
after I disable these am I allowed to work AND I have to perform this task
each and every time I reopen Word.

Again, thank you, Beth. I didn't click on "default" when I exited
Word so I
turned off the PROMPT TO SAVE NORMAL TEMPLATE option. I got this
from
Microsoft Office. But, it also said "or there may be a problem with
Word."
Just now, I turned PROMPT TO SAVE NORMAL TEMPLATE back on. I copied
and
pasted five pages from the above-referenced article and, when I went
to save
it, I got the following dialogue box: It was named, "Some of the
features in
this Documeent aren't suported by Microsoft Word 97. - Nested table
cells
will be lost. Cell contents will be separated by tabs. - Text color
will
become the nearest supported color. - Text wrapping breaks will
become
linebreaks." I got a similiar message, as you know, once before.
This
dialogue box appeared only after I reinstalled Office as an attempt
to "fix"
it. I still don't understand why I'm receiving it. I never did,
again, when
using earlier editions (2000, XP) of Office.

I opened then went to close another Word Doc. I got a dialoge box
labeled,
SECURITY WARNING. Within the box, "Contains macros by Microsoft
Corporation." I went to "details" and got GENERAL tab. It was
named
Microsoft Corp. and Countersigner "VeriSign Time." I navigated
through this
box and was asked if I "wanted to INSTALL CERTIFICATE . . ." I did
not
intall any certificates.

I clicked "OK" until I got back to SECURITY WARNING. I could,
DISABLE
MACROS" or ENABLE MACROS or MORE INFO. I went to "more Info" help
from
Microsoft and part of the Security warning info said: "The document
might
contain a macro virus. If you don't expect the document to contain
a macro,
you might have a virus that is adding a macro virus to the document.
Check
your computer for viruses and try to get an uninfected copy of the
document
from the source."

"The macro might be in a document you downloaded as an HTML page
from a Web
site and opened as a temporary file. If your virus scanner tells
you it has
cleaned out a virus in this documnet everyt time you open it, you
are
removing the virus from the temporary file only, not from the
original
document on the web server. Check your computer for viruses, and
notify the
ssource about problems with the original document." Beth, over the
last
couple of weeks or so I was copying and pasting large amount of
information
from "Webopedia Online Dictionary for Computer and Internet Terms
and
Definitions."

I checked, DISABLE MACROS. Probably not the thing to do but I
couldn't
close the WARNING window until I did.

I followed the steps to set macro security to MEDIUM. I cleared the
TRUST
ALL INSTALLED ADD-INS AND TEMPLATES box. There were no "trusted
publishers."

Next, under Tools, options. File locations tab, file types and
selected
startup. Clicked Modify. There was no "Folder name." The cursor
just sat
there blinking and waiting for my response. I had none since I
didn't know
what to do.

Under "How can I determine all the add-ins that Word loads when it
starts?"
i did what you said, Toos, Macro, Security, Medium. Trusted
Publishers tab,
clear Trust all installed add[ins and templates.

Beth, I've learned a lot but I think I am getting out of my "comfort
zone."
I am getting in over my head. I am so worried and frustated with
myself I'm
in tears!!

Okay, this is the last issue I confronted: EVERY time I open word I
can't
do anything. After several seconds, the SECURITY WARNING window
always
appears. I click on the red "close" X. It won't close until I
click several
times and each click brings up different smart tags. First,
FPlace.DLL, then
FDate DLL, then MOFL.DLL, then then FStock.DLL, the FPerson.Dll,
thenFname.Dll then Mofl.Dll again. Only when I click thse seven
times and
get these seven different smart tag names in this sequence, will the
window
close. After a few seconds, the cursor appears to allow me to work.

Beth, again, I have no idea what is going on. I honestly can't
afford to
bring in an IT professional right now. I might not have installed
Office
