normal.dot and save windows

Although using Word for years, I have had a problem lately.
1.What is the path for normal.dot?
2.When I open docs, I am now getting a "save as" window, I
cancel, and another "save as" opens. When I cancel that, I
can work.
3. The task window shows normal.dot as the last document
opened.

Please email any ideas.

1. The path for normal.dot varies according to operating system and the way
Word was installed. You can see what it is on your machine by checking Tools

Options > File Locations. Look at the 'User Templates' setting. On my

W2000 set up it's [My Documents]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

2. This sounds like a virus; but it might also be a bad (but harmless)
macro. Check what code is attached to normal.dot and to any add-ins that are
getting loaded.

3. This is probably a consequence of problem 2.
