normal.dot error

Thomas Lindberg

Got a new PC in the office, WinXPPro and Office 2003.
Had saved my old faithful normal.dot with all the styles, macros, etc. and
installed that.

All ok EXCEPT that I could not save new documents!

All variants of Save, Save as ... just gave me a screen update and that was
it.
When exiting Word or the document, Word asked to save the doc.
Same there, no save action. The only way out was to cancel and loose the
job.
(Ok, I copied to notepad and saved the text).

???? Any ideas what caused this ???

As a second step i re-named my old normal.dot to old_normal.dot
knowing that Word would create a new normal.dot.
Then I copied all styles, macros, etc. that the Organizer in the macro tab
provides
and things so far look ok.

BUT the new normal.dot is only 2/3 of the size of the old_normal.dot!!!!
What is still tin the old one that I couldn't copy with the Organizer??
And how do I get that over to the new one????

TIA for all and any thoughts!

Thomas

The one kind of thing stored in normal.dot that you can't copy with
the Organizer is custom toolbars and keyboard shortcuts. (See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/WhatTemplatesStore.htm for
a table of items.) That's hardly likely to account for a big
difference in size unless you had tons of toolbars. If you need to
move those customizations, see
http://www.chriswoodman.co.uk/Shortcut Organizer.htm.

The size difference is more like to be related to the reason for the
saving problem -- corruption of the template
(http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm). Something
got saved where it shouldn't be, and that made Word "lose its place".
