microsoft/I have spent four hours trying to change normal.dot in Word 2003
installed in Vista.

I have tried program files\microsoft office\templates\1033 and also
user......\roaming\microsoft\windows.

I cannot seem to store the updated normal.dot. Apparently the normal.dot is
stored somewhere which is hidden to searches and windows explorer.

Yes, it is in a folder that's marked as hidden, but it is possible to go there.
Enter the expression

%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates

in the address bar of the Computer application and press Enter. This works
because %appdata% is a standard environment variable that points to the folder

C:\Users\<profile name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

While Jay has explained how to find normal.dot, if you open normal.dot to
make changes to it when you save it it will save back into the correct
folder you opened it from. Note that you cannot create normal.dot, only Word
can do that. Simply creating a template and naming it normal.dot will not
work correctly.
