Normal.dot global template ... Changes?

Everytime I exit Word I get this error, "Changes have been made that affect
the global template, Normal.dot. Do you want to save those changes?". It has
Yes, No, and Cancel buttons. This pops up every single time Word is opened
and closed even if nothing is added or changed within the document.

As expected if I click No nothing happens and then Word closes and clicking
Cancel just gets rid of the error message until I try exiting again. If I
click Yes a message in the status bar says, "Word is saving Normal.dot" for
several seconds and then I get the "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem
and needs to close..." error message (this is the one that allows you to
send an error report to Microsoft).

I am using OfficeXP and XP Pro and have tried reinstalling and repairing
twice but the problem still remains. Any ideas anyone this is driving me up
the wall?

Hi, Morgan.

Try this. Go to Start/Search/For files and folders and enter Normal.dot.
When it opens, right click it and change its name - say Normal2.dot. Reboot
and Windows will recreate it and all should be well.

Good luck,

Hi Ed

I have done a thorough search and for some reason there wasn't a copy of
Normal.dot on this computer. When I reboot Normal.dot is not being
recreated. I pasted a copy of Normal.dot from another computer into the
Templates folder and rebooted but the problem is still the same. Any other
ideas appreciated.

Hi, Morph.

As normal.dot is not being created, part of Office must be corrupted. I know
of no way of completely removing Office XP. I can only suggest you again try
uninstalling and reinstalling. However, during uninstall select 'Delete all"
when asked about shared files. When uninstall is complete, shut down and
cold boot before reinstalling.

Good luck,

Ed
