normal.dot is in use

If I already have a Word open, and open a Word attachment from Outlook, I
receive an error message that normal.dot is in use. I understand that this
means that more than one instance of Word is open, but how can I prevent this?

If you use Word as your e-mail editor in Outlook then Word is open and
running for Outlook messages. You can go into task manager CTRL+ALT+DEL and
see if winword.exe is running and try to kill it.
