Normal.dot.old

We're using Office 2003 and place normal.dot in c:\office2k3\office11. We
have modified Word's standard styles and default margins which are included
in the normal.dot that gets pushed out with our installation of Word. We have
several situations where multiple users log on to the same machine (which
include job sharing and visiting offices). When this occurs, the normal.dot
in this location is renamed to normal.dot.old and a new one is generated for
the subsequent user(s) in c:\office2k3\templates, hence losing the
customizations. We've implemented a macro during the launch of Word that
checks the normal.dot and if our styles aren't there, it copies them from
another document that we have stored locally (but it doesn't always work).
We didn't have this problem in Word XP. Any suggestions on why this is
happening and how we can avoid it?

Hmmm...

Word has a perfectly good system allowing each user to have their own
normal.dot (which you can tailor if you really must) and you have designed a
convoluted method of your own.

I can't tell you why your macro isn't working (I'm not even sure how you
make it run) but the easiest way to avoid the problem is to let Word work
the way it was designed to do. Use policies to set defaults and/or put your
modified normal.dot into the default user templates folder.
