Normal dot problems

G

Gen Campbell

When I open a Word document the following messages come up

1 Cannot open Normal.dot or
2. Cannot open the existing "(after the inverted commas
this is a picture of a little square which I cannot insert
here) then it says run time error 1069, which I would say
is a Visual Basic error.
3. I can use Microsoft word, but this error is annoying.
If I try to modify Normal.dot say in the font and upon
exit I am advised that changes have been made to global
templates do I want to save them and I answer yes, it says
that it cannot save as it is open elsewhere. I have
searched for other normal.dot and I only have the one.
Can anyone help me here as this has been a problem for
sometime now and I am at a loss as to what to do and have
exhausted all areas I have looked to solve the problem.

Thanks

I recently read about this problem in a (very good)
column in the Chicago Tribune. The writer says (and I
did it and it worked) to delete the normal.dot template
because it has been corrupted, possibly by an html file.
When you re-load Word, the proper normal.dot template
will be restored. It worked for me.

i can open a new document from an existing document 2 or
3 times but after that get a message saying not enough
memory or disk space to complete operation. The thing
is, I've got heaps of memory and disk space.

I did a search to find my normal.dot and nothing came
up. Could my problem be that my normal.dot has been
deleted? Can i re-install it without completely re-
installing office?

Word won't operate without a Normal.dot. If you have a recent version of
Word and haven't made any customizations, then Normal.dot is still internal
(hard-coded into the executable). It's created the first time you change
something (macro, AutoText, toolbar or menu, style, etc.). But you won't
find it unless you have Windows Explorer set to display Hidden and System
files.
